AberFowl
Looking at a w reg range rover v8 that a friend is selling cheap Its the 4l v8 with a 4speed automatic box... What are automatics like to drive in snow and off road, do they drive well in the snow and mud?
PhilR
Wouldn't change my auto Disco for a manual mine is regularly in thick Northamptonshire mud. Not had a problem in the snow getting around either. I do have Goodrich ATs though.
keg
Landcruiser LC4 Auto, had it new from 07 and even on road tyres it has never been stuck. With ATs on as PhilR mentioned, i would take anything on.
HDAV
LR autos are designed for 4x4 use offroad and many say the new ones are better off road in auto than manual as for W reg check the LR forums for known issues.
will_gleave
I have a 2012 Nissan Navara auto with the original tyres, not got stuck in any mud or snow yet, seems to take the complications out of everything.
Alycidon
I had one of the first auto Discos in 1994, sold it at 274,000 miles, then has a TD5ES and sold that at 262,000 miles. Far better than manuals in dodgy conditions. I did get the ES stuck but I had driven where I should not when i thought my next door neighbour had crashed her helicopter. No issues what so ever with either gearbox. Just change the oils and filters. A
casts_by_fly
In my jeep with low lock engaged, I don't need to use the gas pedal. Foot off the brake and let it crawl out. That is the beauty of an auto. Rick
four-wheel-drive
I love my auto 4ltr jeep they do say that autos are best for offroad as you do not need to slip the clutch you control everything with one peddle.
fendrover90
Most of the v8 defender challenge trucks are auto they're apparently better at putting power down with the least amount of wheel spin

What are automatics like to drive in snow and off road, do they drive well in the snow and mud? Auto is very good indeed off road and in the snow, a one armed man used to take on most and win with his auto converted landy in trails. If you watched Top Gear in Iceland (were they were lighting tires to re-seat them) the locals used auto.
Twistedsanity
Had several shoguns and pajeros now, all autos and never got stuck anywhere but I have diff locks and a low/high range box
Hector Vector
I've got a Series 2 Disco TD5 auto and it's absolutely fine off road even with road-biased tyres (never used it for anything really challenging mind you). I wouldn't comtemplate a manual now that I've had an auto. It suits the vehicle much better than a manual 'box. LR clutches and manual gearboxes aren't exactly the nicest to use in experience... BrowningDJC
I find you get far less wheel slip with an auto, my next truck will be an auto
neil3728
I have a N reg Disco 1 auto, with the right tires it's almost unstoppable off road. The only down side to mine is going down steep hills, 1st gear does not engine break that well and will just over rev itself, so you need to be on the brake a lot. I had exactly the same thing with my auto disco, my mates manual was much better on slippy hill descents.Other than that they are great. I wish my defender was auto but it's a fortune to convert a td5
