shootgun
Autumn is my favorite predator fishing season so left the guns in the cabinet and went out on my favorite spot on River Wey in Surrey, a spot which produced many 20lbs + pikes every year... turbo33
Crikey, that's a monster shootgun I caught one similar, river way, near Pyrford, many years ago........10 years old at the time. Bloody thing nearly pulled me off the bank, before it smiled at me and then broke the line Edited October 11, 2014 by turbo33
fenboy
Looks bigger in the photo, I have had pike to just over 30lb from the fens but have not fished for them for a few years now. shootgun
The big ones are just starting to show up as the weather is getting cooler, i always caught the biggest ones towards the end of October, beginning of November. And i don't touch live or dead bait, all of my fishes are caught with lures , light spinning rod and 10lbs braid
fenboy
I would agree late Oct -Nov is a very good time , so is late Feb until the end of the season. Catching on lures may be more fun but a big deadbait cannot be beaten for a big pike IMO , I would also add that the popularity of summer lure fishing has perhaps had as big effect on the declne of pike numbers in the fens as our friends from eastern eurpoe have. shootgun
Can you eat pike? I can, why not? But those are going back in the water every time. Macro in Croydon are selling fresh pike...
ayano3
I looks like you have had a battle with it shotgun. Nice fish but would not wish to catch it. Horrible things. I have eaten Pike and it was fine but would not want to prepare it as there is quite a few bones. (Allegedly)

I have eaten Pike and it was fine but would not want to prepare it as there is quite a few bones. (Allegedly) It was a bit of a battle as the bank is 3 feet above the water and there are loads of logs and snags around, not much space to play with the big pikes, especially when you use very light tackle. It didn't fit in the landing net as i have a light one, but it was pulled out safely with a lip grip... wouldn't stay still for a picture though They haven't got a lot of bones, and pan fryed is very tasty

Penelope
An unhooking mat might be useful in future, just helps protect the fish on the ground and doesn't remove it's protective layer of mucus which is part of a fishes immune system. Other than that, a nice fish from the little Wey. Catching on lures is more fun and requires skill

Passionforangling
I've just stocked up on a few dead baits and terminal tackle. My aim this year is to catch a 20lb from the River Blythe by me. I'm sure I know where some big girls hang out if you'll excuse the phrasing. Mind you, I thought I knew where they were last season........and they weren't ! Good luck to all pikers venturing out over the coming months Edited October 15, 2014 by Passionforangling

I like to travel light and cover a lot of ground in one fishing session, and i normaly use a Boga grip, so the pikes doesn't even touches the floor... With this one though, was a bit more difficult as the bank was very high above the water, but it went back in , unharmed.
fenboy
Wanting to travel light is not a good excuse for not having the correct equipment to protect the fish IMO
shootgun
Wanting to travel light is not a good excuse for not having the correct equipment to protect the fish IMO Well, i have all the appropiate equipment , i'm not quite sure if some people on here knows how to use or what is it a boga grip though... Let's jump on someone who catch and release a fish for not having a unhooking mat, forgetting we shooting birds and animals, blasting and clipping pigeons and pheasants with a shotgun and maiming rabbits, foxes and deer with a rifle .... I am quite aware what a boga grip is , I personally would not use one on pike either . It has nothing to do with shooting stuff , we shoot stuff to kill and eat them , we catch pike because we like to catch and release them so they can be caught again at a later date and have the chance to grow into bigger fish , for that reason they need to go back in the best possible condition and that means using an unhooking mat and any truly responsible angler should carry one , a basic unhooking mat roles up and weighs next to nothing, I am sorry if you feel otherwise.
