Guest rimotu66
Guys I need your input here, a chap wants to swap his L200 for my BMW, its a 54 plate, Warrior with 133k on the clock, he says hes had it for 8 years and never had any of the big problems that these trucks can have, serviced and cam belts done including crank pully. Ive used text check and all seems ok, only 2 owners. Its going to be a 2 hour drive for both of us as we are a long way from each other, anything obvious to check for please? bullet1747
I've had one with the hard top, only problem I had with it was the third gear was a bitch to get synchro was on its way out, was just out of warranty , wanted four grand for sorting so I traded it in other than that it was the dogs dangles
Farcombehall
I had a 54 plate warrior 120,000 the head gasket went had it all stripped down head skimmed new thickest gasket and head bolts all tightened properly started up and still blowing after looking on Internet found this to be a common fault with this year warrior, the head is ali and engine cast so not compatible. If you decide to go ahead look for air bubbles blowing in header tank. Good luck
Guest rimotu66
Thanks guys, the head problem I am aw\are of but is it a given? do they all fail at some time? The chap has owned it since it was 18 months old but is he getting rid because of the dreaded air bubbles? Just like buses ive just been offered another 54 plate warrior but its in Devon so would meen a 3 hour drive if we met half way, oh what to do Maybe best to keep the Beemer and my good old Trooper but I could really do with getting back to one vehicle

When I took it to a garage in Trafford Park to be repaired, you should of seen all the 53 and 54 plate L200's they were repairing with engine problems. Stay clear at that mileage
al4x
I've had a few now and most problems are relatively simple to do yourself if you are half competent. The head is a known problem but new heads are pretty cheap so it's not that major an issue. On that mileage you have to buy on condition and service history. If well looked after then it could be fine but I would want to look over it well first. P.s I reckon zapp might be along shortly with a comment...... Fisheruk
I'd still recommend something more solid like an Isuzu or Toyota. The Isuzu Rodeo Denver is in a different league to the L200's IMHO Edited November 1, 2014 by Fisheruk
al4x
They are a lot more money though, and there are far fewer of them which means parts etc tend to be more expensive. If you use either as a shooting truck then you are bound to break something.

Zapp
including crank pully That's good news as mine sheared its crank pulley last week and it's just cost me £900 to have it fixed.
countryman
At 133k on the clock i would leave it, Chances are you will be hitting the problems, mine was ok un till about 100k.
al4x
The crank pulley has a couple of issues it has a harmonic dampener fitted which is what usually fails. Simple fix and doesn't do any engine damage. I'm guessing yours was a tad more than that though zapp

Sheared bolt that needed drilling out, damage to the crank nose, new pulley needed... lots of fun. In fairness that price did include a cambelt change which was due anyway. bluesj
I'd still recommend something more solid like an Isuzu or Toyota. The Isuzu Rodeo Denver is in a different league to the L200's IMHO If going for the isuzu don't get the auto if you are going to do and towing, the auto boxs are weak! As has been said the 2003/ 2004 l200 seam to be the worst for head gasket problems, I think a lot of the problem are dew to the EGR cooler. dodeer
A lot of the old L200's are overpriced. My pal in a main dealer sends 02-04 L200 with 130-200k on clocks from £1500-2500 price ranges. Imo a Ranger/ Mazda B2500 would be a better bet
Guest rimotu66
Thanks for the reply guys, I would prefer a Hilux or a Denver but as you know they command a higher price, I have my BMW on ebay for swaps with a 4x4 and up to now I have only been offered the two L200's , I'm starting to think I will wait until the new year and keep the BMW and Trooper for now. Dodeer, I really do not like the Ranger, we have 2 at work and they are awefull to drive imo.

The new shape is a big difference both in economy and comfort
