Big Al
Because of a foot injury, I have been wearing Cabelas hunting boots instead of wellies for about a year. I love them but am having trouble finding gaiters that are up to a bit of abuse. I bought a pair of hiking goretex ones that have lasted only three quarters of a season - very disappointing. The ex-army ones don't fit around my calves so I wondering if anyone can suggest a tough alternative. My budget is £25 - 30. Thanks in advance. panoma1
Depends in what sort of terrain you are using them? Brambles and briars will cut, scratch and rip most legwear up in fairly short order!
seeker
Leather riding gaiters ... I have some from coarse Brown leather with a Velcro strip down one side, an elastic underfoot loop and a Velcro strap at the top .... surviving barbed wire n thorn bushes ... not goretex waterproof but a spray with silicone helps. I suspect these were a diy project Ps AJS at Southam has a few heavy leather riding gaiters reduced to (only) £60 ... bit more stylish but looked solid Edited November 27, 2014 by seeker

ben0850
I've demolished loads of pairs with crampons when mountaineering. I would only buy Outdoor Research now (OR), decent buckle straps and good quality. I've not really battered a pair of 'shooting' name gaitors like the chameau ones so can't comment on those. welshwarrior
I was given a set made of bridle leather nothing goes through them not as breathable as others but hard as nails.
Dangerous Brian
Barbour do a set of waxed cotton gaitors. Not breathable but have stood up to my abuse so far. From the feel of them they are about an 8oz fabric. I have replaced the strap that goes under the foot with some electrical cable. The straps are replaceable but will fray when going over a lot of rock.
fizzbangwhallop
Just bought another 2 pairs of the John Norris Highlander gaitors at £11.99 a go...... thought I'd lost my previous pair and guess what turned up on the shelf at the back of the beaters cart today. (Knew they were somewhere 'safe' ) Been wearing the old ones for 2 seasons going into 3 and they've done well through some pretty hard bramble, beating 3 days a week etc etc and the only slight problem has been the material where the zip joins has now become a bit of a fiddle to get the teeth to bite. But at that price I can live with that. Had 2 pairs of the Harkila Ripstops prior to these and they were rubbish by comparison... and not waterproof... just like the leggings made out of the same rip stop material...rip stop maybe but definitely not wet stop! Expensive mistake....and they were on offer too. https://www.johnnorris.co.uk/search/john-norris-special-offer-highlander-gaiters-5920.html Oh yeah.... nearly forgot...front zip covered by a velcro'd flap makes putting them on a lot easier than faffing around with a rear zipped pair... and it stays cleaner. figgy
I've got some large calf gaiters that are doing very well, not to expensive. I'll dig out the name and post it up. Lad on same shoot has black Islanders and they are superb and last he does a lot of picking up on grouse moors too so they get hammered every season. These are expensive. Big Al
Thanks for all the input. Tbh I am now thinking of cheapish nylon ones (like highlander) or a really good pair. So much for my original budget - I'll either half it or double it. I would appreciate it if you could me know the make of your gaiters Figgy. All options are being considered at this stage! rtaylor
I've had a pair of the Chameau ones which have lasted bout 4 seasons, plenty of abuse beating and walking in the fells. They are good with plenty of room for a big boot and leg. May be out of your budget though. Edited November 29, 2014 by rtaylor
dorianbuilders
Harkila @ john norris at the moment on offer, mine have bee brilliant. Only issue is they just have elastic under foot straps which snap, but easy and cheap to replace with elastic from the haberdashery.

Snowlock large calf gaiters from xtreme-outdoors £27.99 Been great this season. If price was not a consideration I'd go for Black islanders. Big Al
I think I'll go the whole hog and get black islanders. In the mean time I have bought a pair of cheap Highlander nylon ones from the bay. Thanks for all the replies.
