Another semi question .....

I'm looking to get a decent higher end second hand semi in 12g, got about £700 to spend , I've been looking at the Benelli premium plus, what do you guys think of it? I've handled the wooden stock model and it felt nice, just wondered if the synthetic stock model felt ok and not cheap like my Baikal hushpower. Also are they steel proof? its not essential just would be handy. Another one I've look at is the Browning Maxus, a second hand one would be bang on my limit , are they any good?

Any other suggestions , or views on the above would be very handy, so I know I'm buying the right one. Cheers guys :)

Mostly people will recommend what they themselves have so really it is up to you to have which you prefer as they can both be altered to fit easy enough.

Personally speaking I would have neither , the maxus gives very little more than the winchester SX3 for a heavier price tag , and the Benelli is just that a Benelli , I have shot a few of them and they all kick like mules .

For my £700 I would buy a Beretta 391 over either of them.

Or a 303 if you do not need 3" and not carrying it around. Much easier to clean.

Any decent make that you like will Serb you well. The easiest to clean is the Benelli the browning or Winchesters are both very good guns and so is the Beretta.

Pick up as many as you can and shoot any you get chance to before making your decision.

In the pigeon hide my age is such that the recoil from my favourite cartridges in my little 25" is getting to me so I went to look for somethig else to use, keeping the 25" for the walked up game. I've never been stuck on the idea a self-loader and consequently remain totally bemused how I strolled into my local RFD and strolled back out with a 26" barrelled Maxus Partridges. I have no idea about any other offering, but to answer the question as to whether or not the Maxus is any good, my answer is yes it is. The recoil with the Rotweils is as gentle as a gnat's bite without the afterpain. The 3" chamber cycles 67.5mm faultlessly. Although of no concern to me, it is steel proof. On a really good day I could shoot 2 for 3, now that is routine. This is down to gun fit using the shims provided plus two extra. First gripe: 2 shims can be fitted so why not include 2 of each instead of just the one. I wasn't quite sure which of two would do the job so had to order both - £22 including postage for two bits of stamped out plastic. Second gripe; I cannot believe how lucky I was not to lose the magazine cut off lever hinge pin - it was hanging by a whisker when I saw it. I don't think it was correctly installed as it went back in seemingly into detent but to make sure I followed it up with a tiny drop of super glue. Now it's up and running, I simply can not fault it but emphasize that I can't comment on any other make/model.

The only semi I've bought new was a Browning Gold, its been great. I don't think you can go wrong with the benelli and berretta guns either, although they have got very expensive. I'm hoping to buy a 20b semi later this year and it will likely be a Bernadelli mega 20, I've no direct experience but its EU made, has great reviews and the price is about where I think a semi auto shotgun should be!

Stump up the extra for a M2, much better build quality and a better allround gun.

Be warned they do tend to shoot high.

Premium plus is a old design thats been around for years as the beretta ES100 and I think the Benelli 121. Also as it's seen as the lowest entry level Benelli you might find you take a hit on resale. (No offence to premium plus owners)

Avoid if you are recoil sensitive and go for a gas semi.

You could pick up a near mint beretta 391 urika with what you've got to spend and providing you looked after it you'd get your money back when you were ready to part with it. Reliable, soft to shoot and always in demand!

Forget the m2.

Get a montefeltro. Its a benelli bird gun. Its on par with the 391, and still the classic gun used for those Argentine dove shoots.

I looked at the bernadelli too, but I ended up buying a Monte. A different system inertia.

I looked at maxus, bernadelli mega, and the montefeltro. I ended up with a synthetic Monte called a comfort.

I tried my hardest to make it jam. I made it go sluggish. But no jams.

You just saved me a lot of typing!

As above aim higher (no pun intended) and go for an M2. They cycle anything and don't 'kick like a mule' unless you're a delicate little love.

Easy to clean and just work.

armsan semi may fit your bill - very good reviews less than £400 new too for the synthetic and a little more for the wood version - seen one build quality is extremely good for the money - main thing with any gun is "fit" - then you have a better chance of hitting something.

I think if I was in the market for an all round proper workhorse tool auto shotgun, one to cart around with me doing the feeders etc, thrown in the back of the vehicle to be used and abused, I think it would be either the Benelli M2 or a Baikel MP153, and I'd probably come down on the side of the Baikel.
