pigeon controller
Following last weeks 200plus haul we did not expect to do as well this week, we believe that the increase of pigeon activity in our area was due the the snow cover in Scotland and up North. So Friday morning was a bit of a shock as we set out with an indicated -2 degrees and a thick covering of Hoar Frost. We travelled out to three main rape farms and the story was the same at all of them , good flocks of birds sitting in trees. At the third farm we went to see the Farmer as the birds had started to drop in. he told us that he had another chap comming but he would put him down on another field. Just then the farmer from the niebouring farm stopped and said " I put a 1000 pigeons off my rape yesterday you ought to go and sort them out" We spooked the birds off the first field and went to look at this field with a thousand pigeons on it. We had looked at it on the way but the bottom of the field is about a half a mile down a track so we set off, when we arrived at the far end we counted three gas guns and no pigeon!!!! We went back to the first farm and looked at the field no pigeon they had not returned so we decided to move on. The other shooter had arrived and was setting up on another field so I drove down and told him we were off and for him to help himself he said he had another shooter comming later on so he might go on the field we had watched. The time was getting on and we decided to retrace our steps as the frost had all but gone by now. We went back to the first farm we had looked at on our way out and it had birds down,so we set up with twelve thawed birds. It was now 14.00 and the birds were very tight flocked . We had the advantage of shooting indivdual birds comming to roost over our decoys , we shot till 16.00 and managed forty one but they were very spooky and we had to keep changing the pattern and move the magnet to even get a few to decoy. Saturday , we had the rain overnight and it had frozen hard , the Traction Control and the ABS were working overtime at some points. As is the norm we headed out in a different direction to shoot a different flock and soon came to a rape field with two or three hundred birds playing follow the leader. one would drop in and they all followed. This year the rape on two farms has been planted next to each other, so we phoned the two farmers and said we would be on the rape . We had to stop the Disco in the lane and unload the gear to prevent a long walk , as we did the birds lifted and went off into the wind. We walked across the field and the first thing we found was a plastic decoy in the rape so we knew it had been shot as we found the hide position in the hedge , no feathers but lots of footprints. We waited for thirty minutes and nothing returned so we moved on. We passed a few fields with birds down , clapped them up and they went off into the distance. So we started to head back to the city and retrace our route, At a field we had looked at earlier we clapped them off and they just lifted and dropped straight back in , so a quick phone call and we were setting up with twelve fresh birds from the day before with two on the magnet. It was 12.00 and the wind was a south westerly and we set up accordingly after half an hour it changed to a north westerly so we had the change the pattern but he birds stayed local and kept returning til about 15,30 when we decided to pack up. We picked up one hundred and twentynine birds , over the weekend we had covered 130 miles and ended up shooting two local farms.

I've always gone on upwind of pattern about 15m advice appreciated We usually set up with the wind off our backs so the decoys are in a u in front of us , so the magnet would normally be front centre in the midst of the decoys . If spooky put the magnet in front of the the decoys to the side, so they can see the movement and bring them to the pattern. f.
