Andylea
Just reading about fenboy's red letter day that didn't quite happen (joys of pigeon shooting), a mate of mine plants and manages cover strips for 5 commercial shoots in return has all the pigeon shooting once the pheasant shooting is over. He was having the same problem strips blue with pigeon turn up magnet decoys ect for a poor return,on his way home went past few more strips and again blue with pigeon. That night rang a few lads and organised another do at them,4 guns on different strips + rope bangers round and about, same again poor return and tough to decoy. Next day while driving around same cover strips blue again with pigeon with good steady traffic, one thing he noticed was birds were constantly on the move around the strip. Plan B,managed to borrow 4 magnets,7 turbo flappers & 75 dead birds, put all the magnets ect in front of the hide bag return 347 for 411 shots, his theory is the more movement and a tight pattern with dead birds they decoyed with more confidence Now I know we hav'nt all got access to 4 magnets ect or the amount of ground that he has,but if any of you lads up and down the country can set it up it would interesting to see if it worked for you,I,ve got an invite on Saturday different cover strip same set up will send a post with an update. pigeon controller
In my experience the more decoys the better they decoy, as I posted on Saturday we had seventy plus out on the rape.
Masher
Would agree with this method in my experience, I have bought some days in Wiltshire around this time of year and the guide always insisted on getting at least two magnets out and two flappers with as many dead birds in the pattern as you could muster and 9 times out of 10 this would do the business. JDog
A useful post for those intending to decoy on maize. As usual the sceptic in me queries the number of shots relative to the number of birds picked. Well, a pal of mine recently brought a day in Wiltshire, on cut maize, and was set up with 1 magnet and 6 dead birds in cradles. 4 other guns in the area. He shot 165 from 260 shots, total bag 830ish. OK, the number of decoys will soon have swelled, but he started with 6 and they "poured in" , Carefully managed pigeons..... In my experience the more decoys the better they decoy, as I posted on Saturday we had seventy plus out on the rape. I presume you used shells? or Fuds or "Siily Socks", otherwise setting up would be a huge operation??
Cranfield
That was certainly some assembly of decoying equipment and an excellent result. There is no doubt that dead bird decoys can you give you an edge. I am not sceptical of the shot/kill ration you achieved, when the birds are decoying well and close, I know quite a few good shots that achieve those averages. Knowing PC they would have been dead birds , When Motty and myself have shot together in the past we have certainly had the same sorts of numbers if not more on occasions , it really does not take that long to set them out as you are doing a few at a time as the bag builds rather than starting with that amount. Andylea
JDOG,he's a consistent shot unlike some (meaning me),does regular decent bags through the summer months on fallen wheat ect

I usually seem to have to carry my stuff for "miles" (well 100's of yards), it's bad enough taking the fallen home without 70 passengers -perhaps that's why I don't seem to get these big bags?? bobby dazzler
A farm I shoot in Wiltshire had 7 French chaps come over for the week and they all shot over cover crops and had a total of 1200 birds

I rarely use dead birds to start a day with now , but I do add any I shoot to the pattern , so they are not passengers , I start with decoys and end up with dead birds out. Masher
Do I get the impression a certain pigeon guide in the wilts area has ruffled some feathers so to speak ? I wish when I bought a days pigeon shooting it cost only £1.20 a bird !! Bargain. Nothing like finding your own for free though.

There's one that turns up on our patch whenever there's good stubble shooting with foreigners, can't stand the slimey ****.
