ben0850
Wish you were my neighbour! Currently dropping in over 100 traps a time plus other methods and still have a right mess all over the farm, this year seems to be worse than I can ever recall...seems like a downward spiral since the strictnine ban
MK38MAGS
I doubt you'll get to shoot many moles with a spaniel running around. Other than that, yes it works but traps are cheap and effective. Thanks but thanks not what I originally asked, I don't go mole shooting with a spaniel. I am simply having a walk in a large number of fields where I have a gun in hand , may be a fox, pigeon, rabbit, crow or a yettie! !!!!!!. With or without spaniel. If farmer want to buy traps, he can (and does, with yellow flags on where he has planted them. Re askea question. Any one contribute their mole extermination with shot gun! I'm not interest in mole killing with. JCB's Washing machines gas chamber or hand grenades. (Not a dig😃😃😃😜 at you 39TDS by the way) Edited March 4, 2015 by MK38MAGS

Sure someone will quote. Where are you? In box me. Edited March 4, 2015 by MK38MAGS
39TDS
Molehills change colour with time. Depends what soil you have but around here the dark hills are fresh and they go lighter as the wind dries the soil (this doesn't work in the rain) From that you can see where and when they are active. When you see the soil move just shoot into it. You need to be quiet (so no spaniels!) in order to sneak up on them. Doesn't matter what cartridges you use, 7.5s definitely work. Normally do it wearing my slippers. Edited March 6, 2015 by margun
farmerben
I'll add my bit. On Tuesday I shot 9 moles in the space of about 45mins. On a good working day they will dig at the same time which has been about 9.30 and 1.30. Drive round and establish the area each mole is working in and make a mental note also try and establish the time your moles work by kicking some hills over. Drive round at approx the right time and usually if a mole is working you'll have a push in 5mins. Wait until the mole has a good heave, something like twitch, push, push, heeaave and BANG! Job done. The old man always used to shoot them out the land rover at about 5yards or so but I rather go round on the quad and creep up the last 10 yards or so. Make sure you don't drive or walk over the main run coming from the ditch or hedge. I have traps too because some moles just have erratic working times to the others and shooting them just isn't worth the travel time across the farm. Hope that helps. Edit to add: don't kick too many hills flat because the mole keeps going back to push up the bit of soil that falls in which makes it harder to know where he's going to be working. Fisheruk
I've done it many times, from 6.00am. I take a canvas chair out and park myself in range of recent mounds, normally only get one per day. Trapping is time consuming and if you cannot be out to check traps on consecutive days it is the only way. It works.
Paul taylor
Well maybe I've had a puzzle solved tonight, seen a few fields this week with little yellow flags on the grass maybe they are marking traps. Was only saying yesterday to lad I work with that I've never seen so many mole hills.
Paul223
Just goes to show how some people just don't know or are to quick to judge, I've shot plenty over the years, I gained one permission just by shooting moles when I was a teenager, go the right time of day, heed some of the advice on this topic, you'll be surprised ! Paul223
Also reading some of the comments I'm sure you'll agree Andy that there's some similar advice to that which I gave you on Sunday, gives you a good idea who knows whats what. Nice one, I got 3 this morning in about 30 mins, so it's quite effective if you get your timing right, thanks for contribution.

sako751sg
Shot a few and the old fella has shot loads with the shotgun.Rarely did it on grass but best method is just after the parks are sown and newly rolled and you get see the fresh mounds appearing.Stealth is the key and sometimes a fair wait but very effective. activeviii
Are shooting miles the amount you walk between mole hills. Well! You would have thought so if you saw the size on njc then a mole hill is like a mountain to him. He is so small he was glad when pistols were banned as he got fed up of the barrel dragging on the floor when pistol was in chest holster.
