Insurance and modifications

Just had to cancel my insurance and take out a new policy elsewhere due to a 2inch lift and diff tyres on my new truck.Fortunatly there was no cancelation fee as they quoted because they can't provide insurance.I asked the question is it because of the lift modification and they think I am green laneing,but I am only driving the margins ect.The reply was driving down a farm track to the farm itself is classified as green laneing.

Fortunatly I ended up insured with Flux Direct fully comp for £229 with all modifications declared.This got me thinking how may people don't bother telling their insurance company when they change things on the car like a diff size tyre or anything that's not manufacture spec.

Modifications seem to have been more of an issue for insurance in recent years.Fair enough I declare "fitted towbar" with no added cost but if I,through ignorance,do not notice previous owner has fitted non standard wheels/springs or whatever does that invalidate insurance?

Flux special vehicles, another division apparently, are the only folk we could find that would insure the Argo's 3rd party. Can't remember how much now but not expensive for two Argo's that aren't registered with dvlc (no registration number, just ID number).

Always declare mods.

Also make sure they will pay like for like if the worst comes to the worst as some will only replace to standard spec and not replace declared mods.

.I have around 10k of mods on the car, all declared and still only pay 400quid a year insurance.

I work in a body shop when we have cars in with undeclared modifications on them we inform the insurance company as per our contract but they couldn't give a **** I have only 2 or 3 times come across insurers refusing a claim

Every 5th car that comes in now seems to have bold tyres they don't care about that either

That's why I like Lancaster Insurance. I filled a declaration form in and sent in photographs of the Landy to get an agreed valuation for an extra £15. They sent me a certificate with the agreed valuation on it. This can be changed if you add anything.

+ 1 for Lancaster, been with them several years, just got this years renewal, £126 fully comp :good:

If you have a 4x4 its automatically covered for offroad and green laning by Lancaster as they assume if you have a 4x4 that is what your going to do sooner or later. Even with that and having a high value vehicle fully comp was £200 + £15 for the valuation for me and OH for 10,000 miles per year.

My recent upset with my insurance (Direct Line) was I had a renewal quote I was happy with 376quid. I allowed it to auto renewal, then my Wife happened to say had I told the insurance about her small claim (less than 2k on her own car policy). I hadn't bothered telling them as it was a multi car policy so all with the same people therefore they knew she had had a claim, but she insisted I call!! They then demanded a further 176quid for keeping her on a policy that covers me to drive approx 7k miles a year of which she probably drives less than 200miles!! I explain all this to them but they had none of it and said I must pay. I told them to cancel (under the 14 day rule they have). I then took my business elsewhere (Admiral) and the policy reduced to only 292quid all in, so a saving of 84quid on the original price and 260quid saving all in!!! That's me finished with Direct Line for good!

I would always advise insurance if I modified my car though, just in case.

Just watch out with the 4x4 insurance. I was paying £130 full comp on my paj. Covered wvwrything, including green laneing.

 

Down side was because it didn't use the no claims scheme, I lost all the no claims I had built on my previous insurance.

When I sold the paj and moved back to normal car I then found all my ncb had gone because of not used for more than 3 years.

 

It took a little messing around but the broker I used sorted it all out for me in the end. I just took a year out on the car via him and he signed to say I had the full ncb I needed.

 

Facebook 4x4 specialist insurance. No one could get near his prices and I used it once when so!done wrote the new car off into one off my 33" bfg's I let my insurance deal with it and claim it back of other parties insurance.

 

 

So just watch the small print on ncb

Heads up,Flux Direct are a nightmare to contact.Three days on the phone,finally got through after been on hold for 45 mins and then passed around from pillar to post.Was on the phone for 1hr 8 mins just to get a Insurance cert sent out( printer broken).Never again regardless how cheap they are,hope I never have to make a claim.

I insured my van through direct line for years, then they announced that my spouse could no longer be on the insurance due to being commercial policy, then I had a cold call from Gladiator offering me a better deal, and that they did. Read through all the small print and everything was the same as my previous policy but with the wife included, and £140 cheaper. And the joke was, the policy was with exactly the same company as with Direct line. :no:
