leadbreakfast
I'm thinking of playing with my gun to try improve the looks, maybe polish the action and blue the hammers and guard possibly do the stock aswell. But will it look right or should I leave alone. Here is a pic
Scully
As it's a W&S I would leave well alone, but that's only my opinion.

Blackpowder
Its an old gun and bears the patination of its years very well, if the gun is safe to use, good barrels, tight action I would leave well alone. Of course you could do some work on the stock, but old guns tarted up as new lose some of their appeal. Blackpowder

rimfire4969
Looks like I'm not touching it then ha ha. Just fancy playing about with one will have to find something as a project or maybe mess with my old a303 Have a chat with Wabbitbosher on here, I got a really nice Fred Williams hammer gun for not a lot of money of him and it is just right for a project gun. I use it quite a bit and it's my Boxing Day gun at our syndicate. Still a work in progress.
demonwolf444
Your gun looks nice for a gun of its age. By all means have a go at oil finishing the stock, there is plenty of advice available on these forums and else where for oil finishing - but don't just slather a bottle of true oil all over it and in the checkering. Generally polishing out the action is a no no, though there are circumstances where you might do it like on a worn out gun of little value, even then metal polishing is a skill like any other. Guns of age have patina and these signs on wear are honest and hard earned over hundreds of years, this patina adds to a guns value so stripping it all off through polishing is not really recommended. However there is a difference between patina and just plain dirt, some rough old guns i have bought have been just plain dirty, and there is nothing wrong with washing with solvents and giving it a once over with fine steel wool - whats the point in nice engraving if its filled with years of grease and grime! As for bluing hammers its a personal preference blued hammers is not original - hammers were color case hardened from the factory, however in some cases blued hammers add a bit of contrast to the action, but some people love it some people hate it,

That's what the wife is for, I'll play with my guns. It's the oldest worthless gun i have got that could be played with really that's why I chose this bit now realise it shouldn't be done so will soon be picking up a sbs that needs restocking and some cleaning
