Albert 888
OK,have a hifi as in the separates, but theyare playing up, as in amp-cd player, the radio never really tuned in. I'm in the process of transfering all my cds to the computer and need to downsize the media wall to make room for a new arrival. Basically I want to listen to my old cds,dab radio and TV,dvd, pirate sky through some proper wired speakers and amp. I have speakers cable various connectors a flatscreen TV,ipod nano, laptop and smartphone plus broadband Internet conection. Mrs has a kindle, huddle smartphone. And would like to keep the size and wires down. Any recommendations. I'm retarded who it comes to computers and modern thing so will have to be easy to use. I realy struggle putting cds onto the ipod nano. Cheers Albert. Edited May 4, 2015 by Albert

Mungler
There are an array of options. I recently bought a set of speakers (with a sub woofer unit) for the computer off ebuyer - I think the set were twenty five quid including delivery and the sound they make is genuinely unbelievable - years ago to get a sound like that you'd need to do at least £250 plus on an amp and set of speakers. The default answer to your question is 'Bose' or 'sonos' but there's a whole new world out there now.

An all in one type thing that can try and do everything or are you just looking for something to primarily play music? It's quite important as although a decent AV receiver will deliver great audio for movies and music, it will rarely be as good at reproducing music as a dedicated 2 channel stereo amp. There are a raft of answers but I certainly wouldn't default to bose or sonos, there is a huge array of equipment out there that will do a much better job for the same or less money. I see Bose especially as more of a style item as opposed to serious audio equipment.

aris
The Sonos stuff is probably the way forward. If you have an amp and speakers already - you can get the Sonos Connect. If you only have speakers, then the Sonos Connect:AMP. If you want to start from scratch - just look at the other Sonos offerings. They are on the pricey side, but the integration is pretty seamless. You control it all from your smartphone or tablet.
Billy.
An Apple TV box will do it. Have a good sound system hooked up to the telly and let the Apple TV do the rest. Got a song you want to listen to, output via your iPhone to the ATV Want to watch a movie? It's got Netflix or you can mirror a computer to the screen. Sky will be on another input, so you're good for that too. If you're set on doing the pirating thing, then if you can get one, an Apple TV 2nd gen will give you all the channels you want. Albert 888
Looks like I may be able to do most I want with what I have. Thinking of using the laptop to store music and play dvds, the radio I can get from sky. So i think I will be able to run everything through the tv to the amp and out the speakers. I'm trying to get rid of all the bulk of the system as in cds dvd players and the separates. Will try with my original Denon separate amp and mission speakers. Need to dig all the leads out of the loft and have a go. Think it's a USB lead to the tv from laptop I need to find. May look into one of those apple things or the other boxes. It's been a wile as been happy with cds for years until the player stopped working.
happypig
Or an airport express plugged in to the output on your hifi..... I have one on an old Bose sound dock and there is no need to use an old iPod with it anymore Edited May 5, 2015 by happypig
Billy.
I'm actually surprised Apple have not released a standalone Sonos type system (yet). With the Beats acquisition, I'd have thought they may dip into this market, but I think they only bought the company for their streaming service. Their advantage is that they can turn any system into a wireless player, using the Express routers. Given the millions of opinions that are out there on what the best speakers/amp is, they've got a product which can turn any hifi into a Sonos-style system. Edited May 5, 2015 by Billy. I've not used an airplay system in anger - but I have used a friends Sonos system. The integration is remarkable. Take all your MP3's - be they on aNAS, iTunes or whatever, add all the internet radio stations, Spotify, Pandora, and other similar services, and integrate them into one seamless interface on your tablet or phone. A party I was at a bunch of very non-gearhead people were able to search for music, and add it to the Sonos playlist for the evening - from all sorts of sources. At one point in the evening, tensions got a bit high with regards to music selection (alcohol may have been a factor), so the men-folk went into another room and had the Sonos stream a separate playlist to that room. I must say, I was impressed at the integration and ease of it all.
oowee
I just got a naim musso wireless system (British) and it plays stuff off any storage via blue tooth or wireless. It's cracking kit. Then I signed up for spotify and the rest of the music I own is redundant.

HDAV
Go to a 'BOSE' shop, all your needs will be catered for. At extortionate RIP off prices a bit like buying your weekly food shop at M&S prices from Aldi................ Naim ... nice... there are other options including some ripping devices, honestly learning to manage your music digitally is the best idea then buy the hardware, Sonos is really easy to get multiple rooms running. Linn is another option, B&O at the high end, itunes and apple airplay at the bottom end... the brennan was aimed at your specific marketbut production has ended http://www.brennan.co.uk/not sure how good they actually were..... aris
Go to YouTube and search for 'sonos review' - it will give you a good idea of what is about. Richer sounds sell them - I'm sure they can give you a demo.
Billy.
Linn is another option, B&O at the high end, itunes and apple airplay at the bottom end... That's a bizarre list. You're rating speakers against software and wireless connectivity options.
Del T
Love our sonos setup. Didn't think I'd use it much but it gets used daily without issue. Once you've mastered the controller (your phone or tablet) its so easy. Different playlists in different rooms is good.

I am sure some will say that there are better sound systems out there but for sheer simplicity it has to be sonos. Click, click wow. I just need to know if I can integrate some expensive speakers and a subwoofer that I have into the sonos setup. If not they'll be on eBay. An easy way to explain is , put all your tunes onto a phone or tablet etc and connect to your sonos system(speakers) and it will play wireless. No cables etc, once its set up to your internet all the family can connect to it via their phones/tablets and play their music. Each room with a sonos speaker can play the music, different rooms can play different music all at once or you can have all the speakers grouped together so you have the same song playing in all the rooms to really annoy the neighbours! Lol. Hope that helps a bit.
