Hi does anybody have any idea on a budget holiday in Cornwal ? I fancy hiring a campervan but there about £800 for a week round lancashire ! I'm not sure if I'd enjoy camping but I surpose if the weather was ok Id give it a go. Maybe a pod or somthing ? Must be dog friendly though ???

Get a tent, a decent tent, a nice BIG tent, like this one!

HPIM0643.jpg

Then get the toilet tent as illustrated!

The toilet tent is used in conjunction with an under bed storage box and a Ring camping shower. Use a bucket, 2 kettles of cold water to one of boiling water - nice shower! Used for toilet when not showering. Showering is a case of get wet, soap up, rinse off, like using a touring caravan shower.

Get electric hook up. Essential, can get a small fridge, have satellite TV, lights, halogen oven, kettle, toaster so all comforts. Heck last trip we even bought a value microwave from Tescos when we were down there (about £20 or £30) used it for the fortnight then gave it to the Salvation Army the day before we came home! That and the ubiquitous 2 ring camping stove with grill under makes a pretty damned effective kitchen.

Join the Camping and Carvaning Club. By using the sall sites which only offer water, electric hook up and waste disposal point you can get a holiday in Cornwall for about £10-£14 per night! So the cost of the tent etc soon gets wiped away by the holiday saving.

I've stayed at Tollgate Farm last year,

Nice place, good facilities and clean, not to long a walk down into Perranporth where there's a CoOp and usual seaside tut shops, ice cream parlours, fish n chip shops.

Regarding Mackerel fishing, we went on a couple of boat trips out of Newquay and a good few.

On the whole though,

Although our campsite was spot on,

We found Cornwall to fairly expensive to do anything, I suppose it's a limited season so they have to make the most of it ??

We'd certainly recommend Tollgate Farm, and Cornwall generally but I don't think we'd try and do it on a shoestring budget again.

Expensive? Not really! What about the Treasure Park near Redruth? Free to look round. Not that expensive to have a go on the Pearl lucky dip, the find the diamond, nice to walk round and watch the gold and silver smiths at work, not to mention a DB5 and a DMC-12 Doc Brown conversion!

How about satellites? Or rather the dishes they are served in? Currently undergoing refurb but not that pricey when it is running!

Lands End, because you just have to!

There are plenty of castles to look at! But St Michaels Mount is worth a visit!

Worked up a thirst yet? How about sum noice cider and sports cars?

How about some mind warp in a bottle? Try the Walter Hicks carefully (71.4 ABV)!

Not into alcohol? Well how about watching ice cream being made? Oh yes you can!

Plenty of fishing off of harbour walls, jettys and rocks you know. Bring some light 3lb gear, use ragworm and fish for Balan Wrasse on the rocks at Swanpool Beach Falmouth, damned things fight like tigers, else use a beachcaster, old spark plug for weight and 30lb wire trace to hook and fish for conger there as well (had a 25 lb one doing that).

Need any other ideas?

Cornwall is many things but its certainly not cheap.!

Plus Cornish Pasties don't exist these days do they ?...when I was in St Ives last year I walked up through the town very early morning. A delivery driver was loading trays of pasties into one of the shops on the high street and I had a chat with the driver...He had driven down that morning from Birmingham.. The pasties were made in Solihull.

Thanks to the return of a stable Conservative Government the pound has really soared, so why not take advantage of a package deal abroad..it will be much cheaper .........one of the benefits of being in the EU

Thank you for the reviews. It's nice to here that the people who have stayed with us have enjoyed it. Looking forward to meeting some more PW members this summer and getting on the outside of a few cold ones. Edited by rimfire4969

Always plenty of Mackerel around in the summer, with a good chance of Bass.

Fisherman Mike - Cornish pasties, made in Cornwall and excellent:-

Horse and Jockey at Porthleven.

Philps at Hayle.

Malcolm Barnecutt at Wadebridge - finest I have ever had.

Sorry you misunderstand me ..I meant to say real Cornish pasties don't know of any one that makes genuine Cornish pasties these days, which are savory (meat or fish one end) and sweet the other.

saw some in a bakers in Penzance many years back but not recenty.

Used to be a lovely bakery up West End in Redruth. Made the best pasties I have ever tasted, made to a family recipe that was over a hundred years old and they supplied many of the shops and restaurants in the area. Not made in Birmingham and not expensive either.

Cornwall is only as expensive as you want it to be! Stay in the places like CLs (certified locations), be prepared to stay on sites that are small, do not have pubs, restaurants, swimming pools and other ways to extort cash out of you, be prepared to go looking for your entertainment rather than have it bought to you and Cornwall is only as expensive as holidaying anywhere else!

You are referring to the Bedfordshire clanger I think Mike which is the suet based double ended savoury and sweet pasty.

That "genuine" cornish pasty thing of savory and sweet in opposing ends is a myth.
