Viking - I used to have a very large MIG, which I bought from a local garage. I didn't use it that much and sold it. I have a large arc welder, but wanted something for thinner metal, so I bought another. Local tool sales in Blackburn - free delivery - from memory. I have had it about 15 months - works perfectly well and cost less than £100 - three year warranty.

It's a no-gas model, which I previously avoided. I had a monster CO2 bottle which was a pain to get refilled. I was worried about the price of fluxed wire spools, but on the bay, they are as cheap as non fluxed.

Thanks Gordon I will look at that.

get a model that uses gas...and use an argon/co2 mix...the argon i think acts as a "wetting agent"............

damn right espesially when folks dont know about them and forget to "hook" them out of the head !

What's the difference between gas or no gas. Apart from one having gas and the other not. "Before anyone else points that out"

From what I can gather from YouTube no gas does ugly welds.

They look bloody lovely but it is all about how they work..... are they any better? will you pull more torque?

Edit to correct word failure due to spending too much time in the Newcastle arms......

Only time will tell malk.

looks fine cept for those pathetic gas bottles...dont last 5 mins.....sign up and get a 1/4 or half size co2/argon mix bottle........if your mate has a garage he will already be in a contract...so you may be able to do something with him........the trick with mig is....

  • good gas mix
  • flowmeter
  • plenty of contact tips
  • keep feed tube clean
  • keep internals dust free (difficult)
  • dont let the wire get rusty

keep on practicing until when you weld it sounds like frying bacon........you push a mig pool and draw mma...........you will pick it up quick cause you are like that...

Argoshield is the name for the gas I think ditchman!

I get a nice big migatronic to play with at work. Plenty of time practicing on scrap!

Cebora make the Snap On MIGs. I can weld neatly with no gas.

no gas sounds like a lot less fuss gas wise, and to say i might get board of it after iv messed about with one for an hour or so

we want flames !!!

ill leave the flames to ditchman, id burn the ******* garage down if i tried that

Don't buy cheap -- sometimes you can get away with cheap Chinese gear but in this instance I didn't.

Have a gasless MIG set that refuses to feed the wire in a Continious smooth action- it's all or nothing, or jerky protrusions which makes it nigh on impossible.

Switched back to stick welding and brazing for most, but I am looking at getting a new 'inverter ' set that can do TIG too

some of the best inverter sets are Fronius...they are made in Germany or Bavaria......find out where your welding set supplier is and ask them if they do 2nd hand rebuilt sets...go for a AC set maybe as you will be able to do aluiminm with it....also find out who the supplier is for your gas at the clubhouse bar you run....they might be able to supply you with a mixed gas.....C02 is fine but a 2% argon mix is much better....

IMO, if you want a MIG for general mild steel welding on your landy, I would recomend one of about 140 - 160 amps, preferably fan cooled and stick to CO2 for the sheilding gas as you have access to it from the club. Just get an appropriate regulator for the cylinder and off you go. Agreed, argon mix would give better results, but do you want the hassle and cost of getting a cylinder that needs a rental contract with BOC or the like and I doubt you would really notice the difference in performance. I have had a 120 amp mig with CO2 at home for over 25 years and it has served me well on projects like yours, just remember to take the wire out and store it somewere warm and dry during long periods of no use.
