foosa
Been calling down ere last week or so, they're definitely pairing up now. In fact I'm waiting out for 2 right now, watched them for about 5 minutes the other night before they disappeared without a chance of a safe shot. Paul taylor
What do they sound like when calling?
Grandalf
Loud! When a vixen screams close to you, in a wood, on a dark night you'll get very religious very quickly.
steve_b_wales
What do they sound like when calling? There's one Vixen who say's, 'Yoo Hoo boy's. here I am' Seriously though, it's hard to describe the sound. It's a bit like a 'Yelp and Howl all in one. The first sound in this video clip is the one that most people will hear. EDIT:

wymberley
Before you run the video, put the dog out. The springer has just gone absolutely ballistic!

Ha ha nice one I know what you mean lol. I ask because shortly before I found this post I was out with the dog and heard screeches I didn't recognise coming from a field where I was squeaking in two foxes last weekend, no gun with me just practicing and it would appear after listening to that clip it definitely was a fox so thank you for educating me gents👍

WelshMike
There have been a few calling in the last 3 weeks. I was staying down on the south coast (a place called Winchelsea) a couple of weeks ago and heard a vixen calling....noisy swine woke me up. Pairing up, kicking out cubs..any excuse to make a racket. crowdie2013
I always thought they started breeding December time; do they pair up earlier and hing aboot courting before going for it? Serious question; or is it wham bam and the dog go`s off looking for another vixen?
Grandalf
Dog can follow the vixen about for days waiting for that right moment. Sometimes two or three other dogs in the area. Then they can mate several times in a day/night and can be 'tied' together for ten/twenty minutes just like dogs.

Not many times that you get to shoot 2 in quick succession, but if you come accross a tied pair shoot the vixen first.
fizzbangwhallop
I had a vixen and a second dog in to the ritualistic vixen fight this week. The first dog had wandered up to the usual 'Yell' at last light.....he took his time covering about 50m in the undergrowth of a woody bank before sticking his nose out. Half an hour later the vixen came at a fast pace to the fight call, the second dog caught me a bit by surprise as all of a sudden it was pawing at the body of the first dog.... hadn't seen it coming with the thermal. All before half 6. Cheers Fizz There's one Vixen who say's, 'Yoo Hoo boy's. here I am' Seriously though, it's hard to describe the sound. It's a bit like a 'Yelp and Howl all in one.
