Where to get 300 win mag factory ammunition

Recommended Posts

Not your boat George you only want the cream 20 .300 win mag rounds are £54.95 but these guys only have 40 rounds a year for field use . Target boys more but most home load ,we only want factory rounds to get the cases then you don't see us again .is a different ballgame with bullets we the home loaders can make much better ammo than any factory as we taylor the rounds to our rifles

Absolutely right plus everybody has a different preference regarding brands and bullets which is why the RFDs don't even bother to try. I don't know who's prices you are quoting there though (£54.95) Privi .300WM is £15.20 per 20 which is a bit more like it! Would be worth getting a hundred just for sighting in and keep the cases.

Maybe more of a business in selling the 'hard to get parts' than made up ammo. Unless you can cover the huge variety of components people would want?

For instance, I load in my 243 - Winchester brass, CCI primer, Viht N140 & 150, Speer 100gn soft point, Nosler 70gn BT's, Nosler 55n BT's - I wouldn't want to use any other substitutes, and those that hand load likely wouldn't want to either, that's before you get to trim length, seating depth, crimping etc.

However, I know that many folk struggle to get hold of reloading components for 204, 17 Fireball, 17 Remington and Varget was all but a myth in most shops not so long ago. I'm just not sure how you make a business out of doing just this given the hurdles in selling expanding bullets and powders. It's just not as simple as shotgun cartridges.

I guess for those willing to have a 'proper cartridges' complete round made up in the popular calibres it could work, especially if cheaper than the big boys. But for exotic stuff or specialised loads I'm no so sure.

It's a way off but Wilson & Wilson at Minster Near Ramsgate used to ( I haven't been in for a while.) carry loads of big, big stuff. if you wanted to go on safari with a 416 Rigby, 300 Win mag or a 450 nitro express he had everything and if you said I want 200 he'd flop em out on the counter. He could be a Bit of a funny sort of bloke but I got on well with him.

PS he used to have a big ad in the gun mags.

Its not just the unusual stuff thats hard to source, I have had .303 fmj bullets on backorder with Kranks for months.

Thanks guys, spoke to Antony from claverdon cartridges today and he's putting a order in this week so he's getting some Norma. He did mention getting some ppu but he says they only do full metal jacket! Surely that can't be true?

Cheers

Dan

Yes .300 WM is a popular (ish) calibre for target shooting F class and that type of things. Tactical boys use it. Hence the FMJ. But for the price its still worth getting some PPU for sighting in and general getting used to the rifle because Norma is going to be treble the price.

Are you really sure about that?

Yes reasonably sure, the Americans used it as a sniper calibre for a while before going over to the .338 and so the Walts over here read about it and wanted the same. I think that the .300 and the .338s caused the 'over power' row at Bisley a few years back that got them banned on the ranges.

I don't really like that crowd, they spend a fortune on their kit but there is a definite air of Rambo about some of them. I know somebody who has just spent £4,500 on one of these tactical rifles (not in .300) but is not capable of ever using it properly and plays with it on the Short Siberia range at 100yds Sunday mornings. When I asked him why he bought it he said because the USMC use it

There must be a demand for the ammo in FMJ for these boys because Kranks have only just started importing it.

Its funny because I have never seen a 300 Win Mag used for any serious F-class and any shooter would steer well clear of 145 FMJ. Kranks had to fulfil a minimum order quantity and chose Very badly when they specified such a useless bullet specification. I suppose Bisley is a very closered world though. Definately an out of date approach if used and crrtainly Not seriius F-class, just plinking. For ballistics, ~200gr bullets in the 300 wm will closely match the capabilities of the 338 with 250's so moving up to 300's extends capabilities with the 338 and that is where it's advantage begins.

Yes I thought that about the bullet weight as well when I saw it. I would imagine its just a cheap way to get doner cases to use with Sierra bullets. A lot of these blokes are just plinkers though. Like buying a Ferrari and then using it to go to Tesco.

Just about sums it up. I've got large amounts (able to buy) or 223 and 308 on my FAC, but I'll probably only buy those amounts once or twice, to get the cases.
