Underdog
Friday's day off work I walked about 7miles over 7hours, hunting for pheasants. Not many about this season on me. I missed one, completely pulling the shot and not following through with the Bess carbine. I changed my flint but realised I had put it in the wrong way but only after it failed to fire on a rising cock bird! Anyway, today I visited somewhere else and did find a few birds. Here is the first, Jess was not posing today very well at all. It started raining after the first bird and I desperately clutched the lock under my arm pit shielding that precious prime and flint from the wet. Glad I did as the gun fired quick and strong when I bumped into the second bird. Both birds are pale the latter having nearly no reds or copper colours. Is there a name for these? I have shot an old hen once that was turning back to a cock which I understand can happen after seven years or so but these seem in their prime. When I got in the Bess had turned orange with surface rust, quick wash inside with wet wipes and boiling water. Next I wire wooled the iron exterior and smeared with homemade patch lubricant. Finally replenished the stock with a smear of truoil. Hunting with a flintlock in all weathers soon gives it a patina! U.

Scully
Sounds idyllic UD. Shooting pheasants with blackpowder seems a more sedate way to spend ones day.
