Help me choose a scope

Fit what you have for now. It will serve it's purpose. Keep and eye out (and a wanted ad up) on the various forums and evilbay for something with better quality.

There are very often simple leupold and meopta 6x42 or similar that come up.

I'm also a big fan of lisenfeld scopes and although there are not as many around they do come up from time to time and don't usually make great prices.

£100 can get you some decent glass if you are patient.

If it's a choice between nikko and hawke then for me hawke every time. Had literally dozens (at least) of each and hawke always seems better to me in every respect.

However if I was looking for something for .22lr I would be looking for something like a meopta 7x50 or maybe leupold fixed mag

New versions of Nikko are chocolate and not worth the money even at £30 IMO

you can get vintage silver and gold crown Nikkos from the 70's and 80's for £30-60 in 5x44 through 8x50 and they are bombproof and very good Japanese glass compared to any new Hawke

I wont buy another hawke, personally think Deben stuff is ****, had a "top end" hawke that was useless, IR failed and had shocking parallax between firedot and reticule

I run 3 nikkos now on a Sako quad with 4 barrels

the other two are Walther which are pretty low end but good enough for any 22lr

learn your drops and ranging and any 6-8x fixed scope will gather more light than a low end variable

get a mildot version and learn the drops and dots and you will be sorted

6x44, 7x50 meoptas £100-150

older Nikkos (all fixed mag no variables)

Nikko stirling dimond great glass and clarity for the money, also has illuminated reticle,an older tasco world class plus Philippines glass. Both Thease scopes can be got for under £100 second hand and in my opinion are better than the hawks,Simmons wtc's, and mtc's I have looked through.you can see your 22lr hole in paper at 100m. I personally have a leupold efr 6.5x20x40 on my 455 but that's for target. The reticule will be to fine for lapping.

Slight development, I found this today, I got it brand new with an Air rifle kit I bought and took it straight off, would this be okay do you think?

If you already have the Hawke Sport HD, I would use that and see how you like it. None of the others you have mentioned will be any better. ;)

I use a 6x42 S&B on mine now but have also owned various Meoptas. You can't beat a fixed mag Meopta 6x42 or 7x50 for value for money, which are also fantastic quality and value at £120-£200 secondhand. Meoptas also have the 4b reticle which is a really useful reticle for rimfires imo.

Quality of glass is way more important than magnification or large objective for a 22LR. I used a 4 x 42 Bisley De Lux for years on a 22 and its brighter than most modern scopes I've looked through at 10 times the cost! A really good used 6x42 would do your needs perfectly as Welshwarrior has suggested above. I've seen used S&Bs with a few years behind them go for around £100 occasionally or the simmons scopes mentioned numerous times on this thread are ok (just avoid the chinese made ones and stick to the older and better Philipines made scopes). I now have a hawke HD rimfire ret scope which I'm trying on the 22, but optically it's not a patch on the older Nikko Bisley De Lux scope and the adjusters are more crude. Most modern budget scopes are ****. Good glass costs £££s if you want good build to go with it. You'll simply not get a decent new scope for your budget that can compare with a good used scope.

See Welshwarrior's previous reply, I'm sure he hill see you right on a good used scope.

I use a 6x42 S&B on my .22lr, bought second hand and I've had no problems whatsoever.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to add to this again, I ended up buying a brand new Simmons whitetail 3.5-10x50 classic, I also ended up buying a Savage arms .17HMR.

In your opinions, with the fact the Simmons has Paralax set to 100yds would that be better on the Savage .17hmr or my CZ455 .22LR?
