A tale of two stories

Met up with sandersj89 last night to show him the Quad and let him get a feel for the .17HMR. We arrived on permission just before 8pm and had a quick drive round to show Jerry the land. We returned to the main entrance to meet Sussex Lad and tool up for the evening.

SL kindly bought his .22LR Anchutz along for Jerry to use and I had bought my Quad with the .17HMR barrel. After discussing our positions etc SL set of on the north end of the permission with his .223 and radio. We set set off in the opposite direction.

The total permission covers around 160acres of which we were to cover the southern end of it. This is populated by 300 ewes of which 2/3rds had recently given birth with the last 1/3rd about to. We spent a little while scanning through the sheep and giving the odd whistle when the owner turned up. He was very pleased to see us out and explained that he had lost a few lambs.

All was quiet so we moved on to another area that is always good for rabbit. Gently closed the gate and stepped into the clearing and 60 yards out was Jerry's first chance to try the .22. Rested on a fence post the shot was squared up and down it went. It was to small to eat so it was opened up and left on a feeding post.

It wasnt long before Jerry had another with the .22 and now wanted to see the .17HMR. We made our way on and came accross 2 rabbits out around 80yards. From the pods I took them both with clean head shots. Jerry was amazed that the second rabbit actually sat still after the first shot. Keen to give it a go, we found another rabbit 60 odd yards on a fence line. After moving to get position Jerry squeezed the trigger and got his 3rd. The huge grin on his face said it all.

Rabbits in hand we set off back to meet up with SL. On the way through we checked the ewes again when we spied Mr C working his way through the middle of them "Fox On!". Through the gate and started squeeking. He looked up but wasnt interested and this happened a few times. He was however, quite interested in one of the ewes and kept hiding behind her. Nothing for it, we slowly walked it up. The fox would run off 50 yards but then turn, look at the lamp and return to the ewe. Eventually we walked up to within 70 odd yards and I got down on the pods. With Jerry squeaking behind me we finally caught Charlies attention and called him into 50yards. Sqaured it up, pulled the trigger, down he went.

Upon inspection the dog Fox was in good condition and it wasnt long before we found out why! The reason he was so interested in the ewe was because he was slowly devouring her week old lamb that she wouldnt leave! :good:

All in all it was a perfect evenings shoot which has left Jerry yearning for his ticket to arrive and working on the explanation he's gonna give the wife when he buys a thumbhole Anschutz.

If ever you needed reminding of why Fox needs culling, this surely has to be it!

Good write up axe and a good photo too. I would imagine although the farmer has lost one lamb he will be pleased you got the ******. As for excuses with the missus.... just keep the cabinet locked and use your existing slip and tell her its one of your existing guns :good:. Or always say that your restructuring your assets and by investing in a rifle you are increasing your lesuire enjoyment, thus improving your work and giving you greater odds of a promotion. That should baffle her for enough time to get the gun in the safe

Axe/Sussex Lad

Many thanks for last night, really enjoyed myself and learnt a good deal as well. Great to see both calibres in action and a good result as well.

The result should earn you a few brownie points with the landowner as well.

Just wish my ticket would arrive soon so I can go spend some money!

Many thanks again, top blokes.

They are indeed, and this thread just underlines that fact :good:

But, be honest Jerry, when you first saw Axe did you think he was further away than he actually was? ;)

Ahhh, I was forewarned, I had seen is pic.

Mind you there was a good moon last night but it was shaded a far bit.....
