Removing live primers from cases

Recommended Posts

I've been given a load of primed cases but I don't know what primers are in them or if they have been full length or just neck sized. Is there a safe way to de prim them or should I just get rid of the?

I've used WD40 in shotgun cases that have miss fired but never remove the primer after so not sure if it completely kills the primer.

Most SHOTGUN primers I've seen were totally sealed against moisture (or whatever)

WD40 squirted into the case doesn't work (ask me how I know)!!

Rifle brass.

Some dies you can remove the decapping pin part of the rod. Lee dies, not removable.

I've removed hundreds of live primers with no problems...just go SLOWLY & wear good eye protection in case one pops.

The Lee dies I have in .222 .243 and .300 win mag all have removable decapping pin !!

If they are rifle cartridges I'd just use the primers that are in there now. It won't make much if any difference unless you are loading a really hot load right up on the max.

From reading the post I think the concern is if the cases have only been neck sized. The OP possibly wants to full length size them

If you have been given the cases ask the person who gave them to you if they are new and unfired. You will have to full length resize the cases so that they will chamber in your gun if they have been fired.

Why do you want to remove live primers? If the cases have been primed just load them and fire them. It won't make much difference what they are unless you are loading a very very hot top line load. They will either be a STD primer or a magnum primer and some powders need a mag primer to burn correctly anyway. If the person who gave them to you doesnt know if they are unfired then proceed slowly and carefully chamber one of the cases to see if it will chamber or not. If the case binds up don't ram it home but gently use a rod to remove it and then full lenght resize it.

Try putting them in your rifle and closing the bolt. That will answer the first part of the question. Sometimes even a neck sized case will chamber in another rifle but I understand they may be full length resized the OP wasn't sure
