Oxfordshooter
Tannerite is sold specifically for the purpose of shooting at and making a big explosion, unlike gas canisters, petrol, fertiliser etc. It gives people permission to **** about and make explosions, unlike the other substances mentioned which all advise you to use them with extreme caution and only for the purpose intended. If you play with fire then you're likely to get burned (or blown up).

rjimmer
Diesel is freely available, but not much is needed to turn an air rifle into something deadly.
rjimmer
Tannerite is just Nitrogen oxide, nitrogen fertiliser for example, and aluminium powder 25p and £10 a kg respectively. And less flammable than nitro powder.
ordnance
Diesel is freely available, but not much is needed to turn an air rifle into something deadly. An air rifle is already potentially deadly.
srspower
We all do stupid stuff when we are young most of us survive unscathed, some don't, so I feel sorry for this guy. He lost a leg is humiliated and may end up in life long debt.
Wymondley
So where should we draw the line between freedom, and being responsible for your own actions, and legislation to protect us all from our own stupidity?

I personally would not draw a line, we are not children.

As above, there shouldn't be a line ; not one drawn by the state anyhow.
Wymondley
It was a rhetorical question. Devils advocate and all that! I'm sure we all agree there needs to be "some" control over peoples ability to own and operate "dangerous things". Do we?

I'm sure we all agree there needs to be "some" control over peoples ability to own and operate "dangerous things". Do we? Most 'dangerous things' require the operator to have a license or alternatively to have at least a modicum of training, but you can't legislate against stupidity, as a previous post of yours seems to suggest. Most 'dangerous things' are inanimate objects, like guns, and require input from humans to make them truly dangerous. If we started legislating against ones capacity for potential stupidity, where would we stop?
srspower
A friend of mine I went to college with decided to jump from his hotel balcony in to the pool whilst on holiday in Ibiza aged 23. He hit his head on the edge of the pool and died instantly, stuff happens when your young. We have all been stupid but you can't legislate for it. Nobody ever said liberty was safe. Konnie
Waiting for the one where he balances it on his head and lets his mate shoot at it, to see what happens, seems they have the lemming effect over there if given the wright/wrong tools. Wymondley
If we started legislating against ones capacity for potential stupidity, where would we stop? Exactly. It could certainly lead to a reduction in those eligible to vote!

Couldn't agree more, I'm tired of living in a nanny state where our rights are being slowly taken from under our noses, I still can't believe they're halfway to banning airguns here in Scotland, thought it would happen eventually, just hoped I wouldn't live to see the day.
