spandit
After watching the comedy The Detectorists (brilliant!) and countless videos on YouTube, I'm itching to start yet another expensive and time consuming hobby Wondered if there is anyone local to me who could show me the ropes, as it were? Annoyingly missed out on a really good deal in Hastings the other day but I'm sure more will crop up

oldypigeonpopper
hello, i have been a detectorist for over 20 years and have tried and used many detectors from £100 to £1,000, time consuming yes, checking out history of areas/ coupled with knowing how you detector works best digital or basic switch on and go/ types of soil/sand etc i , expensive yes digs now average £25 a day then there are transport costs unless you have own permission land or join a club where most have very long waiting list. and then insurance but joining FID federation of independant detectors is cheap. due to a former work injury i do not do much now just the odd few hours on a farm. rallies are a good way to start more so if for charity as can be good land. i could say more but like john any more info required just ask if you wish to know and happy to help PMs are ok, ps the artifact he found on the telly comedy i was told based on ALFREDS JEWEL in the oxford museum opposite the posh hotel oh just remember there is also an element of luck with finds so if you give it a try be lucky
boarder
Where abouts in Sussex are you, spandit? Our family farm is on the outskirts of Hastings. A bloke used to come with his metal detector on our land and was pretty successful.
spandit
I'm just outside Heathfield. Have my own 10 acres and know there were troops here in the war (house dates from 1870 or earlier and surrounding farm buildings are much older). Would love an XP Deus but that's a big investment off the bat. Talking insurance, my shooting insurance (CCC3) covers metal detecting too! spandit
There are many .22 cases around as well as bullets. Being an old farm there's bound to be shotgun cases & bits of old wire but somebody must have dropped a coin or two in the last 2,000 years! Over the road is a field with a public footpath which could yield results (if I get permission)

Over the road is a field with a public footpath which could yield results (if I get permission) hello, par for the course i am afraid in any civil war area you will find lead balls, on the ridgeway oxon/berks border you find lots of 303 etc cases as was used for training by RAF and ARMY, ring pulls are another item, these items all give a good signal so your going to dig just in case it is a coin or jewelry etc most detectors do have ability to eliminate iron and say if you finding 22 cases they have a certain frequency which you can null off. my advice once you buy a detector is dig every thing for a few months until you learn what your machine can do then take out iron, cheers
FalconFN
Very apt advice from oldpigeonpopper considering your location, there are lots of medieval iron works dotted around your way, not sure the Romans were there though. On the plus side, legend has it that the crusaders set off on their adventures from there too, so be on the look out for anything grail-shaped... spandit
Most of the cases will be mine anyway I found the Holy Grail years ago, it's why I look so young :D
lincs1963
I was talking to a painter who does detecting, but only at night ! I'm assuming he maybe doesn't have the permission he needs to be on that land.
Jaymo
Don't think my £20 jobbie is up to much- but it served its purpose to find a hidden boundary stake here. But, I did like the TV series ........

I do a bit of detecting. Be happy to pop over and let you have a go with my detector. PM me if interested
spandit
Wow! What a morning! Not only did FatFreddysCat give me an air rifle for my daughter, but we also found treasure hidden right under our feet. On only our third dig we found a coin. It's an Elizabethan penny, dates from between 1973 and 1975, I reckon, and to a collector could be worth as much as £0.01... very generously he didn't even take a share! Also found a brass thimble, some bits of copper and a screw. Oh, we found a gun too...
TONY R
I am not myself, but i do go detecting with my 12 year old son, he has been doing it since he was 8 years old. bought a fisher 1230x has been quite sucsesfull, he learned how to tell the different sounds it makes and is not often wrong, all sounds the same to me but he has the hang of it. He has a decent number of finds now, lists them all has a folder with the coins in mostly Roman and farthings and stuff, but he got a charles the second silver coin of some sort is worth a few quid. Offered to get him a never detactor for christmas because the one he has is an 80s i think, but he was not interested he is content with what he has. It is a decent hoby but not for me, but time with the lad is always good.

bruno22rf
If you want a good detector for not a lot of money then the Garret Ace 250 is a real bargain-used they can be picked up for around £100 and they are easy to use and have good depth. rodp
They are good, I started with one then moved up to the Euro Ace, kept the 250 as back up.
