tonker
Today we were asked to shoot on a new permission to me, but not to Scott. He has shot there before when he lived in Devon. We have been asked to manage the Deer and all other vermin on the farm (about a thousand acres) The Farmer had said he had counted 38 Roe in 30 acres of pea drillings (I took this with a pinch of salt). After an 1 1/2 drive we arrived at 7.00 am, with the intention of just looking. We took our rifles as you do, just in case . Within 10 mins we saw a fox trotting down a track between two arable fields, we decided to take this as it could be the only shot of the day. Scott was up on his sticks and away went the shot, the fox was broadside at 120yds and it dropped on the spot. Half an hour went by with us stalking slowly along the track and the nearest fields when we nearly missed a Buck that was tucked up in the fringes right by the hedge, (bliss backstops everywhere). My turn, on my sticks judged distance to be about 150ish and took the shot, he didn't know a thing, just peeled over. Turned out he was about 180, must do better with guessometery. Another half hour of stalking, and whilst walking down through a big copse saw another Buck coming toward us over the pea field. I froze behind a tree, and Scott went prone and we waited, 5 minutes and he was in range. Down he went to a chest shot, very poor condition this one, thin and a heavy tic infestation (a good one to take). We decided to head back for a cuppa, and when nearly back saw another, My turn, on sticks and waited for a few minutes for a good clear shot as he was just inside a wooded area, my chance materialised and squeezed the trigger. This one was 130, I saw the bullet strike and to my surprise he took of deeper into the wood, oh **** I thought, we got to where he was when I shot and plenty of pins, there was a huge blood trail, although it was very thick he hadn't got far 20yds max, did the gralloch and back for a cuppa. The icing on the cake today was that farmer had only the night before been talking to the other farmers in the valley and they all want their farms managed, so we were given all their numbers and the acreage has gone up to about 5000. In total we saw about 25 /28 deer today with a split of about 50/50 so looks very promising, and also we weren't there first or last light, we saw what we saw without really trying. I took a lot of pics but they're to big to put on, so I'll just show you the two I shot when we put them in the back of the disco. Sorry about the long post but I'm excited about the prospects of this new ground I managed to get two on. Thanks for reading
