FOXHUNTER1
The not so pleasant side of Fox control.Lamb taken about month ago and called her out but she stayed on the edge of the wood and no shot.Farmer saw her next morning and confirmed heavy with milk.Although he's hunted Fox himself and had terriers in the past,he didn't like the thought of Cubs being orphaned same as myself (every year i give them April and May off..so long as they behave) He has been dropping all dead lambs in same place and had no more trouble.Luckily she moved them out from wood onto a hill into 6 hole sett 4 days ago. He's been watching and saw 5 cubs.Met him tonight and he told me Vixen turns up about 7 40pm to feed them.Set up on the hill opposite about 120yds away at 6 30pm.After 15mins they started to appear and sure enough i counted 5.Vixen appeared at 7 42pm.Duly despatched and then the 5 cubs too..not nice after watching them for 45mins but has to be done as every field around them is full of lambs.Low and behold after 10mins a 6th appeared. All done and dusted by 8pm.Sure i shot the Dog end of February as he never showed and farmer hasn't seen him. Spoke to shoot Captain who said get down here as Vixen and Cubs are chasing Pheasants at the laying pens.Called 1 but wary(vixen i would presume)So guess i'll be there tonight as they seem to be after the birds before they roost. Good job mate, nicely done Had a text from a farmer yesterday that he had seen a fox at 8.50pm coming into lambing fields So get to the farm at 8.15 all set up by 8.30 and just as its getting dark at 8.50 a little vixen turns up a few squeaks but she's on a mission and dissappears behind an old building It's now 9.20 and spot the fox heading towards a dead lamb that the farmer had put out for me,Oi and good night for this barren vixen Time for a cuppa with the farmer dont see anything then its now 1.30 and about to go home when I hear a fox barking in the woods within 10 minutes can see her cross the stream and into the field she stops for a pee and down she goes hit her high so a quick follow up shot, another Vixen and looking at her belly she might have been in cub Pic of 2nd fox Good job there mate

WelshMike
Out last night and over to one of the chicken farms that I attempt to look after but never fully achieve despite my best efforts. Arrived about 10 and parked the truck in one of the fields in a nice handy position where I can shoot off the roof to avoid the fences. All quiet for a bit so put the caller on with the vixen mating call to see if the resident vixen (who lives in the National Resources Wales Forestry next door) was feeling territorial. It worked and she appeared about 70 yards away. Down she went. Looks like the cubs had stopped suckling so probably a good old size. I will be out over the next few days to see if they can be tempted out (though I am not sure how far into the forestry they are) Farmer was happy as usual which is always good. bornfree
The first free range ducks went out Tuesday 25,000 of them. I had been out a few times over the past month and seen nothing so wasn't expecting any problems. How wrong I was 75 dead. So i set up the tower yesterday and went back at 9pm expecting a long wait. I didn't even get to the tower as the fox was already there eating a duck I had to stalk up close as he was behind a fence got him freehand at 40 yards. Its the earliest that I've ever shot one. rangey
Hi to all you fox club members thought it about time I joined up instead of just reading it. still cant manage to upload photos yet but I will get there... anyway had a call from a farmer I shoot for this morning telling me the farm next door had just seen a fox taking one of his prize show chickens and was fuming and could I possibly try and sort it for him., not wanting to lose out I said I could come straight over and have a look with the intension of going back tonight. sneaked off from work and thought I would pop home first and pick my gun up...you never no...but didn't expect to see anything...got over to the farm and had a chat with both farmers and a look round. whilst we were chatting the farmer said...theres the little -----------.how he spotted it I don't know, but looking through my binos he was right...long way off....asked me if I had my gun with me..told him yes but I didn't think we could get it in closer.go and get your rifle he says....anyway got my rifle, sticks and range finder out and by this time it was even further away, ranged it at 342yds and told him it would be better coming back tonight.... didn't seem to happy with that and asked me if I could take the shot...im confident in my shooting and my rifle but shooting of sticks with 2 farmers standing next to you puts a bit of pressure on...gave it a shout,it then sat facing me.x hairs on the top of its head, and let loose....down it went and big sigh of relieve from me...only to have 2 farmers laughing saying they thought I didn't have a chance of hitting it.went to collect it,vixen ,with a big hole in its chest ......going back tonight to find the cubs as he knows where the den is....and another good permission secured.... rangey
ive been practicing shooting off a set off quad sticks for a while now and find them really stable.been shooting 5" gongs at 300yds for the last month for practice.so was quite confident at hitting the fox at 342yds.very little wind and head on.rifles zeroed at 225yds and 22.250 with a 50gr vmax hot load only 7" drop....must admit was put under pressure by being watched.but was well chuffed with myself for pulling it off and securing a bit more shooting...would of preferred closer but need be....also got 4 cubs earlier tonight.....all around 40yds..lol

rangey
thanks for the comments fellas thought I might get a bit of flack for taking a long shot of sticks on a live target..took me a long while adjusting to shooting off sticks and many a time they got hurled in the back of the truck in disgust..but one of my permissions is only shootable on foot so had to keep at it.unable to shoot prone through neck problems and no truck to shoot from no other choice but to keep on practicing.now prefer sticks than anything else... must admit to preferring longer range foxing....missed more foxs under 80yds than 200yd plus....tend not to take the time to settle on target when they are close..normally thinking I cant miss..then curse myself when I miss for rushing it... We are a realistic bunch on here who actually get out in the real world and carry out sensible pest control so I am glad that the usual stupid comments that I often see dont tend to be voiced so much (apart from ones about my fetish for man bags ) I am not such a good shot as you but tend to miss the close ones much more then the ones at long range (50 yards + )
Dougy
We do sometimes give a little stick if it's too much of a long range shot. But on this occasion your lucky. You just slipped under the fence by a few yards. 350yds is considered to be the max, and then you get all the pebbles thrown in your general direction, most will be misses so don't worry. It's only a jealous thing you know cus we can't shoot for toffee, but it's necessary you must understand. Lol I must get out myself once the crops are off, blooming stupid farmers growing stuff. Grandalf
You will be waiting for a long time for the haylage cut if your weather is the same as we have had in East Anglia Dougy. No rain for five weeks or more. No growth on the grass. Great cracks in the ground all over the place. Like it should be at harvest time. Farmers getting very worried about the barley and the wheat crop is not looking to bright either. Possible showers forecast for the weekend then dry again. I have usually given up foxing, due to the height of the crops, a couple of months ago but I'm still out and about. Funny old year.
