scorpius
I would be very interested to know on what basis do Natural England decide on the laws concerning the shooting of cormorants, my licence which I believe is general states; they can only be shot using 12,16,20, bore shot gun, the shot should be No3 or No4, they can only be shot if in groups of 2 or more. The regular appearance of a large adult bird cannot be dealt with because it's not accompanied by others, I am not adverse to killing but will not condone cruelty, and in my opinion shooting at a bird at a distance of 30/40 yards using 4 shot is more likely to injury it than kill it. Following a visit from a young lady representing Natural England her suggestion was for me to string wires across the 3.5 acre lake to deter the birds from flying in, or purchase some wooden pallets and staple stock fencing to the base and float them on the water, other suggestions were equally as ludicrous. Your thoughts please.
AberFowl
No4 shot at 40yards = Dead
scotslad
I've always tried to shoot the 1st sitting. With any sweeping statement u will always have differences, some at 40m would be a hard shot others an easy/normal shot, must admit i think a genuine 40m shot is probably beyond my ideal personal limit. But like everything depends on the situation is it flying etc Shooting vermin like that i want to be guarantee to be killing them cleanly and picking them on site
kennett
Really? I would think a 30-40yd shot with 6 shot would be more than sensible, so 4 is more than capable.
davewh100
has Kennett says 6 is good enough that's what I use
scotslad
Mibee different in eng but in scot u have to use steel shot, as over wetland and used to say so on licence. In my opinion a genuine 40m bird is a good bird on a shoot day, i would not be wanting to streach myself shooting thoose things but each to there own
fse10
I use 50g no4/3 & would not use any smaller. The restrictions NE put on the licence are a joke i think that would rather not issue them i don't think they care that much as they are stocked fish the birds are eating but when you are spending 7k plus most years on stocking these black ******* need dealing with. I have seen 22 birds on the water some days but can only shoot 6 birds between September & April & no more then 2 a month doesn't make a dent in their numbers & doesn't stop the ones you don't shoot from coming back. Walker570
Have you noticed when cormorants get grabbed by a mink they always eat the head first.

silver pigeon69
Can you count , didn't know cormorants used calendars maybe he's only allowed to shoot a maximum of 6 birds in that time period and no more than 2 in any month? ( otherwise, yes, 2 per month over 8 months = 16)

Fisheruk
My FAC is conditioned for Avian. Much easier to dispatch with a single bullet.
