ShootingEgg
I tend to put them out in a group with no particular pattern but make sure there is a space for landing if birds come in they have a target Edited November 1, 2016 by ShootingEgg
Exudate
Start off with the horse-shoe, and see how it works. If birds fly-by and don' t commit, change it to something else and see what happens. Keep changing it, if necessary. Of course, the various patterns aside, the real trick is to set up where the birds want to feed in the first place!

pigeon controller
I tend to put out two groups with a landing patch in the centre. Then add shot birds to both sides and clear the patch. Looking at forty yards both sides of the hide you can end up with seventy plus decoys all within range.
old'un
Don't use any particular pattern, I just space them approximately a metre apart, that will give any incoming birds plenty of space to land, obviously your pattern needs to-be within killing range of your hide. motty
In my experience, it doesn't really matter about how far the decoys are apart. Sometimes I put out several dead birds within a square yard.
cooooper1
horseshoe rubbish can`t remember or seeing pigeons, crows landing in any sort of horseshoe pattern so why set decoys up like that? seems a odd thing to do,i`ve seen pigeons in groups of 30/40 in a couple of yards square seen them spaced all over a field but horseshoe, i`m not saying it want work because a hungry pigeon will land in the small space along side others to feed, for me it`s a random pattern,if i`ve got dead birds i`ll just walk about the area i`m about to shoot over and just throw a bird here and a bird there and where never there drop i set them up try that

Wilksy II
I think it depends on what they are feeding on, drilling their well spread, stubble where the combines spilt a load then they will be on top of one another, I think a horseshoe or a big tick shape help funnel the birds in to a kill zone, don't think theres more to it than that, also wind direction has a bearing on your pattern, if the winds dead on your back you can't beat two clumps either side of your hide

You'll never see pigeons flying round in a circle but magnets work don't they? The horse shoe pattern or similar has rarely not worked for me in over 20 years and you could say I've had some success.
