Lack of common sense?

Recommended Posts

So, the situation goes put in for a 1 4 1 variation for a 223 for vermin, fox and deer (where applicable) gets a phone call saying I can't have deer and I can't have vermin, only fox. I questioned the fact I am trusted enough to have an fac and to build on that point he said I could have a 223. He said you need your licence 3 years before I can have aolq on it? If not then after 5 it gets opened up automatically. I then questioned the safety of having to carry 2 rifles on my own, 1 for fox, 1 for rabbit to which I got well that's your choice... however, my ticket will be back before the end of the week and I've got a couple of fox to deal with in a lambing paddock so as soon as it's back pick the rifle up and some ammo, get out there and sort the fox's out. I've been on to basc and am currently awaiting a phone call back from them. Surely that can't be right? I can shoot a fox bit if I want a rabbit I can only shoot it with the hmr... I should probably go and sit in a dark room to sort my head ache out

...here we go again....

FEO who doesnt know what they are doing. Whilst I disagree about not issuing open licences as standard I sort of understand the reasoning behind it but AOLQ should be on there as standard. It is insane for the reason you listed above. When I had my renewal a couple of years ago they did the same even though AOLQ was put on the form. They put AOLQ for the .17 hmr (along with vermin and fox) and missed it off the .243 which was just fox and deer. When I queried it they re issued my licence with AOLQ for everything.

Good luck bud and keep us posted.

Nephew was granted a .243 at first application for fox and deer, with no mentoring. When he received it he was pleased to see it was AOLQ. I can only suggest you move to Cumbria! :)

I'm assuming this isn't your first CF application. Did you ask your FEO where it states a three year wait prior to AOLQ?

Just to clarify, my ticket is closed and it's my first cf. They want me to wait 3 years before putting aolq on my ticket but state after 5 years it will be put on along with open ticket. I'm not fussed about the closed ticket part but if I spot a fox with the 223 I'd like to shoot it then shoot a rabbit for tea... I'm trustworthy enough to hold an fac and have a 223 but can't shoot a rabbit with the bloody thing? Come on  a safe shot is a safe shot regardless what it is being shot... nice to see basc never phoned back

Or suffolk, had my open fac for 8ish years for .22 and HMR. Recently put in for my first 223 and was given it, and aolq with the proviso that it was on a closed slot

Yeah .243 and .308 aolq first issue but they wont open til ive had it 3 years despite experience of multi calibres their rules apply to all no excuses is the Leics police rule so that,s that .All forces seem to interpret the Home Office guidelines in their own way which is what causes so much frustration across Britain

It would be nice if all forces could work the same and I can't really see why they can't.

In my experience Sussex police seem to have it sorted If you can give them a good reason to have an open license and have someone to vouch for you then you they will open it and i believe you get AOLQ from the start

Totally agree with you there mate. See what the BASC say then challenge it.
