Feltwad
What stories they could tell.Any history to them. Not a great deal of history just the pair of punt guns I bought about 40 years ago they came of Grafham Water and most likely used on the by gone ings of that area . Pushandpull
It's a shame how easily these old guns lose their history and provenance. The farthest up the Great Ouse that punting is well documented is in the Holywell/Swavesey area. farther inland than the Washes. If these came from near what is now Grafham Water it is several miles farther inland - pretty much on the A1. Did anyone's great grandad do a bit ? Feltwad
Pushandpull If my memory serves me right I think it was a small village on the side of Grafham Water called east or west Perry. Also these guns started has flintlocks with 12inch lock plates and converted to percussion ,I will go through my old photos and see if I have a photo of the locks and will post them Feltwad Edited February 15, 2017 by Feltwad
Feltwad
Enclosed has promised a image of the pair of puntgun their 12 inch locks which original would have be flintlock but converted to percussion . The shape of these locks would have put these two punt guns when built in the region of 1780-1810 Feltwad The 12 inch punt gun locks
wisdom
Great stuff. Those locks look fairly basic. But very quaint.A bonus in the environment they were used in. What fantastic treasures and pieces of history.
7daysinaweek
How heavy would these have been feltwad. Would it have been a two man operation? atb 7diaw Edited February 17, 2017 by 7daysinaweek
Feltwad
How heavy would these have been feltwad. Would it have been a two man operation? atb 7diaw Although I never weighed them I can assure they were very heavy to carry at a guess I would say 4 -5 Stone imperial and could have been used in a two man punt operation depending where used ,On the ings they were mostly one man punts smaller than those used on the estuary. Penelope
7daysinaweek, this is the type of punt that these guns were most likely used in.
Feltwad
7daysinaweek, this is the type of punt that these guns were most likely used in. The man in the image is Snowden Sleights with his large punt gun . The last time I saw this gun was many decades ago it was in a damp cellar in a museum in York .It was stood along with other fowling guns in a corner its barrel was full of old whitewash that had come of the walls I hope it is now housed in better circumstances.
