Mr gen
my apologies if this question has been asked before, I did have a quick look but couldn't find it anywhere. I have a browning 525 made in 2008, when closed the top lever sits just off centre to the right. Could it or is it a sign of wear and a sign of the gun becoming loose, the more central it ends up on closing the gun? My guns lever will be more central the harder I close it. I have noticed a lot of gun makers, make guns that have levers that sit to the one side nowadays whereas older guns especially side by sides seem to go more to the centre position. is this an indicator built in to modern guns and something to look for when buying second hand? Many thanks Gen
sishyplops
its nothing to be remotely concerned about, wait till you've fired approx. 50,000 shots then take it in for a service, but i bet it would do 100,000 easily without any issues whatsoever, if it concerns you take the stock off blow out the action with air, lightly oil and put it back together, then repeat in another 50,000 you have probably one of the most reliable guns on the planet. bruno22rf
If it's over to the right on a 525 then it is on it's way out......bout another 50 years and a couple of million shells should see it off

Mr gen
Cheers guys, so just to recap the old girls still got a bit of life in her yet . reassuring for the gun but I don't think I have another 50 years left in me though. The DIY service you mentioned Sishy is there any thing in the action that could fall apart if I took the stock off as I am a bit clumsy and have hands that resemble a bunch of large bananas, I am quite keen on doing a bit of maintenance as although it isn't a grade 5 stunner its a keeper that fits well and shoots great. Cheers Gen
bruno22rf
ips - how can you get a top lever tightened into a central position - surely they are keyed in ?(SxS) or a single piece as per the 525?

Think he means when the lever gets to a central position he gets the lock tightened not the lever.

The lever goes gradually central as the action wears. Easy job for a smith to work some magic and tighten the action up then lever is back in its correct position. The lever being central is in effect an indicator of wear.
bruno22rf
Got it Not sure how "easy" it is to do correctly though but easy to bodge it
ips
I have had Beretta and Winchester actions tightened its less than hundred quid and couple of hours work for any "good" smith. Well worth doing if gun is showing signs of getting loose as shooting it for any length of time whilst loose only makes matters worse. sishyplops
Nothing else to look for, the only issue they have is the bottom firing pin needs polishing every now and then but it's very rare you need to do it, watch for the Odd misfire on the bottom barrel, £30 at a gunsmith will sort it

subsonicnat
The TOP LEVER Should be to the RIGHT,If its LEFT of centre it is wearing out.. That is where it should be,,as it Wears it goes Deeper into the Bite and the gun starts rattling.. Dont worry it is ok..

Mr gen
Thanks for all your responses they have reassured that me that the gun will last longer than me but apart from the usual cleaning, what are your tips for keeping your guns in their best condition and out of the gunsmiths?
