Great sport on rape

It has been a lean spell since the drillings have gone in. Most of the local pigeons had disappeared into the woods/towns etc, and were keeping a low profile.

I was certain that some would return to the poorer areas of rape sooner or later. One field in particular I kept checking, just waiting for the birds to return. This week they did just that. I checked it several times and every time I did, pigeons were seen pouring into those patchy areas. These "bald" spots varied in size. The rape just hadn't grown there - it wasn't anything to do with pigeon attack.

The rape plants are in full flower and plenty tall enough. The pigeons were enjoying nice and easy landing areas, in which they could walk around at pick at the lower rape leaves.

Jules joined me at just after 8.30 this morning. Pigeons were already enjoying a feast. It was an overcast, blustery day, perhaps a little too windy for my liking. We picked a nice hide site, backed up against some tall rape with the wind at our backs. We had an area around 30 yards square to drop the birds into.

It was one of those days where the barrels never really got hot, but it was never long before a shot was offered. We kept the scoreboard ticking over all day. Generally the pigeons decoyed really well, setting their wings from way up/off and heading straight in. Starting off with just the magnet, the pattern grew nicely and was very convincing.

I was off form and missed several easy birds that I wouldn't normally miss. On the bright side, we were regularly taking 2 or 3 from bunches, even as they were speeding away on the strong wind.

Barring a very light shower as we packed up, the rain held off.

A very interesting and enjoyable day. We finished with 163 pigeons.

That's a cracker of a day Motty, been lean here since the drillings too....maybe I should check the rape out!

I always find the birds generally decoy better when there are small patches they can land in (laid barley etc), can just imagine them piling into the pattern in that small patch!
