biketestace
Compare it to a coarse fishing licence at £30 a year . . . doesn't seem too bad to me. Agreed
Davyo
if the licence is such a bargain why were people whinging before the last price increase??? I don't think it's the increase,it's more the service or lack of.I wouldn't mind paying £500 every 5 yrs if I had a tip top service with the logistics in place.I think if people think it's too much then simply surrender their licence. CharlieT
obviously you could afford to £500 but many could not! How right you are. Farming is the biggest employer in this area, mostly on or around minimum wage. I personally don't know any locally employed person who could afford that sort of money. As someone who only holds an SGC my interaction with the dept is very limited, if I buy or sell a gun I have to notify them but never have I received a reply from them. Why on earth should I pay £500 to license something I'm legally entitled to own and that causes them very little work? As for the last sentence, well, way to kill our sport! Davyo
Seems the majority want a better service but are unwilling to pay for it.Im not saying it should be £500 (although it's not even £9 a month which is barley a coffee and a slice of cake). The only thing killing the sport is the public's faith in the licence authorities capability to mange the current system.Lets face it every time there's an incident (Atherton prime example) it due to a failure in the department who's main job is to protect the general public.Money pumped in,be it cert prices or public money needs investing in sorting out the logistical mess it is at the moment.Understaffed, under qualified/trained staff can only lead to one thing. Bazooka Joe
Understaffed, under qualified/trained staff can only lead to one thing. I take it it's Durham you are referring to.? My recent S/G renewal went surprisingly smooth this time, a matter of weeks in fact, the old FLO staff have been replaced as the conversation went at the time. They were the problem with Durham IMO, under qualified/self opinionated/what I say goes attitude.

Breastman
As its drummed into us that the whole point of firearms licensing is public safety and therefore the public in general are the beneficiaries of the system, then its ridiculous that the public don't have to pay for it. As a shooter I get no benefits from the system. As a member of the public I benefit from the system in respect to nutters/jail birds being denied access to firearms and i'm quite happy for a portion of the tax I pay to be used for that. As a shooter I now fund the whole system for the benefit of everyone Full cost recovery should have never been so readily signed up for by our shooting organisations on principle. walshie
A TV licence would be £735 for 5 years without the year on year increases.
