Beagrie92
I'm looking at mods for a 17 hmr. Been looking at the t8 and wild cat has anyone got any opinions or advice. Thanks
steve_b_wales
Take a look at the Phantom moderator. If you buy a centrefire proofed one, it will be perfect for your calibre. I have one fitted on my .22 Hornet and it's excellent. Lightweight and strippable too. I bought mine from Sportsman Guncentre.
steve d
T8 on a hmr? Get a SAK for 30 sovs, job done.
Beagrie92
T8 on a hmr? Get a SAK for 30 sovs, job done. I've been told that the t8 is one of the only mods that properly quietens the 17 down and doesn't burn out to quick
steve d
Ok, never heard that before. Be a tad heavy on a little gun though. Benthejockey
I've got a SAK on mine and have done for nearly 10years now and it's not died yet and short of using it to hammer nails in it gets a lot of abuse.
Luckyshot
Doesn't matter what mod you put on an hmr, to your ears they will all sound the same.
steve_b_wales
Okay mate. Do you know much about the wild cat mod I've got a Wildcat Evolusion on my .204 which is excellent, but this would be too big and too much for a 17HMR. mick miller
ASE UTRA is fanstastic. Barton Gunworks do super lightweight rifle moderator. Wildcat etc. there's loads that are smaller than a flipping T8. Edited August 24, 2017 by mick miller
steve d
Okay mate. Do you know much about the wild cat mod Only the Predator 8 i have on the 243, good noise suppression, less muzzle flip etc, but bloody heavy!
Beagrie92
So do you think a wild cat will be to much I know someone with one on a 22 250 and it's not a bad size
telf
DM80 calibre specific does the job for me and apparently calibre specific is supposed to be more accurate
steve d
I think the Predator 8 is too big on my stainless varmint 243, if I could be 4rsed to sort the variation I would swap it for a DPT. Pred 8 maybe ok on 22-250, but thats a CF, too big for a rimfire IMO. Dont know if Wildcat still do the Whisper model for rimfires or even if its any good. Youre never going to get the hmr down to 22lr subs noise levels, so for me the SAK is perfect. My hmr is a short barrelled varmint CZ452, so with the SAK being short and stubby too, doesnt make it a chore using it from a vehicle. psycho
For a small compact mod that works well get an lei. If you want a cheaper obtain then a sak..the .17 hmr is not like a rim fire it makes one hell of a sonic boom which you cannot make quit Below is a good review of various .17hmr mods I use an lei which I would recommend as it's small light and made calibre specific http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/shooting/accessories/ten-of-the-best-17hmr-moderators-5434 Edited August 24, 2017 by psycho

Pigeon Shredder.
SAK. What ever you use won't stop the "crack" and as your behind it you won't notice the difference with whatever you put up front, other than the dent in your wallet. JRDS
I use a Schultz and Larsen on mine, light strippable and works well.

Assuming you mean it will never sound like a 22rf shooting subsonic rounds. Edited August 25, 2017 by Luckyshot
beanieboy
I put a 17 Wildcat Whisper on mine. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure if it's any better than the SAK I had on it previously......looks nice though...

Konnie
SAK on my HMR, as said the speed is what's the cause of noise
Wasabi
Another vote for a phantom. As good as a Sak and its the same diameter as my cz varmint barrel. Shot 3 hares within 20 metres of each other last night in about ten seconds so must be OK.

beanieboy
About 4 times the price of the SAK for similar performance. The Wildcat is, to my ears, a bit quieter, but not by much. SAK used with my .22.
