TIGHTCHOKE
How absolutely wonderful, a woman resident speaking on the Victoria Derbyshire programme on BBC2 this morning is espousing the good that this could do for this part of Essex, but was unable to really give any good reason. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41691003 Her main reason was that sometimes the Council did things people didn't like! So who does she think would be running the place in the unlikely event that they did get granted independence?
Lloyd90
Reading the article - they said the local are given 17 seats on the local council , but there are 24 seats from outside the Island who regularly out vote the locals on issues effecting the island. I'd be a bit peeved off in that case too. Wonder if they'll get independence and be allowed handguns like some other Islands lol
TIGHTCHOKE
Yes, but there reasoning is like saying that any part of a Council that votes differently should be circumvented. Whether that be part of Essex or any area within the UK.
clakk
I can see her point Canvey Island council should be dealt with by residents of the island not 24 outsiders .Of course be interested to hear why 24 non residents have a say on island matters

oldypigeonpopper
hello, it is like the city people moving to a small country residence and wanting the church bells stopped, outsiders should have no say in canvey islands business, POWER TO THE PEOPLE
CharlieT
Seems to me the only responsibility Canvey Island Town (parish) Council has is litter, dog fouling and grass cutting. So why the fuss over who sits on the council, it is after all still part of Essex.
Penelope
Yes, Castle Point Council which includes a chunk of the mainland, Hadleigh, Benfleet, et al. I wondered this, are they included in a wider area?
wymberley
So what's different about Canvey? The redevelopment of Exmouth sea front (flavour of the decade) will be decided by 59 councillors on East Devon District Council of which just 15 represent Exmouth. Gordon R
If they get it, I am thinking of declaring my home an independent state. Only my wife and I live here, but outsiders are making decisions which affect us. The idiots on Canvey Island need to get a reality check.
