WelshAndy
Mum is finally sorting through some of dads stuff. There are a selection of old shooting related books and she has no idea how or who to sell to. Thanks in advance for the help.
panoma1
From personal experience, they are very difficult to sell to a book dealer for anything near what they are worth! They want them for nothing!....and usually want to cherry pick the best ones too!....And you are left with what's left! Top Condition, 1st edition and with a dust jacket will usually realise the best price....though old and/or rare may be less reliant on condition!.....old, poor condition, later editions are usually worth very little! marsh man
You could put them in small lots and try your local sporting auction , people will buy a small bundle of 4 or 5 if they only want 2 / 3 of them , you could also put a reserve on them so you don't give them away . Once you find out roughly what they are worth , try selling a few on the forum , you can send 3 / 4 as a small parcel as long as the weight don't go over 2 kilos . GOOD LUCK . I would look for the same titles in eBay, see what they sell for, then go for similar with a variation based on 'condition'. Some of those titles are not cheap to buy. I have in the past sold books here https://www.dominicwinter.co.uk/ Edited June 1, 2018 by JohnfromUK
old'un
As you have the books in front of you, you could spend a few hours and look-up the possible value of the books….https://www.abebooks.co.uk/books/old-books-antique-appraising-pricing/book-values.shtml Alternatively take them to a auction house that specialises in these books, you could try these people….https://www.rogersjones.co.uk/
Mice!
I've no idea on prices of old books, what I will say is be sure to keep some, it looks as though your dad enjoyed his books, I like old books with nice covers, probably because my dad did. I agree. You should keep some in memory of your Dad who obviously had good reading taste. It would be such a shame for all of them to be sold and too cheaply as well. If it were me, I'd keep them all but realise that space could be an issue for you. It's not about the money, it's carrying on your Dad's passion for our beloved sport. Old Boggy
Having re-read your original post, I realise that perhaps your Mum could do with the money, so suggesting that you keep them all is probably not an option for you. However, all too often you see a collection of books in sporting auctions going very cheaply with perhaps one book worth as much as the whole collection. I was wondering, if you are a BASC member, whether an email to Bill Harriman may assist in the valuation of some of the books. I have always found him very approachable and helpful in such matters.
