I’m only new to this cert/ licence but everything I have read suggests that its getting more expensive and the are more check £79.50 for a grant but as I have just found out I need to pay the docs for a look at my own records (don’t know how much yet) ....they are tagging you med record aswell to flag up mental health issues so why can’t it be 10 years or more...or 5 years first app the 10 or more on renewel.. your thoughts please

Everybody wants 10 years, plenty of it discussed on here.

As for the docs, luckly on my renewal i was asked to pay but i refused by ignoring it and still got my licence. A route i strongly wouldnt recommend for a first time application, i would of paid. Well see what fight i have in 5 years against this

my Quack has recently charged me £40 to reply, this is a first..but on reflection why should a Dr have to pull a file & fill in a questionnaire etc for free...£40 sure is a lot less than my Solicitor would charge for similar task..and his main job is'nt keeping folk alive!!..Whilst initially cheesed off I then thought fair enough..As to the 5 years my FEo said it is to keep an eye on guns/check serial numbers/make sure none were 'falling off the radar'.I actually think Passports/Driving Licenses are similar..just keeps the ££ rolling in..so renewal for s/gun cost me £49 to Old Bill & £40 to Dr ;£89 over 5 years is @ 1 slab of  game cartridges.......not end of the world is it..

Allow a precedent to be established and there is no saying where (and what cost) it will lead!

As to ten year licences, this suggestion has been kicked about for some years now, there is no will from the authorities to pursue it, even though it could effectively half the police workload, reduce the number of police employees administering the system, double the available police time to process applications and in consequence could (but won't!) cut the cost to the applicant!.....but it would not bring in extra money for the police coffers.....could that be the reason it ain't gonna happen?
