Thanks for the praise! Don't be silly - its about maintaining a standard and learning as you go. Anyone who thought they knew everything from day dot was wrong, and anyone who thinks they know it all by the end of their time has settled for "good enough" or simply doesnt care enough to continue the journey.

Your work is nothing to be ashamed of - just look at the hundreds of guns you see with rounded off but ends and a valley between the pad and end, checkering sanded over or even worse run over with some kind of dremmel attachment and little consideration.

Here are some recent works for the enjoyment of people who like to see this sort of thing!

Superb workmanship  demonwolf444  :good:thanks for your post.

did a bit more to allow it to soak in overnight.............when nige brought it around we both agreed that there maybe a bit more i could do to bring out the patterning of a very dull and boring piece of wood...nige said there was a bit in there somewhere.......

i deieded not to put too much red in the mix but stick with walnut and old oak as the walnut has a bit of blue/red in it...if you know what i mean..............the stain has gone deep and thinned out as it went in...so i mixed the rest of the stain with BLO...and have put 3 lots on....but if it is anything like the last one ...another 10 days to go yet...........(am going to have an arm like a fiddler crab.............now where have i heard that before..)

anyway it looks a bit "young" at the moment...but sofar quite pleased for an old BSA air rifle...

time to assemble.......

the first time the new ox spring (for the merc s) was too long....so took it apart and cut 3 coils off...shaped it and heated the end so it could be bent a bit....then grond it off flat 90 deg'...........

assembled it all using just molyslip on the piston and lithium grease on the ram (back end only) and spring....made 2 leather washers top and bottom.....all went together well...

fired it 20 times to settle it in and get rid of the desieling...then chrono'd it.......

SUCCESS

THIS WILL SETTLE DOWN NICELY NOW.......................

one was a bit naughty ....but hey..:yahoo:

How was the twang with the ox spring?

When you say leather washer back and front is that either end of the ox mainspring?

A lot of tuned air rifles end up with more power as they settle in and need another coil off.

Looks a sweet looking gun and a cracking refurb and tune.

years ago one of my terriers ate one of the new leather sofas i had bought..........it was a write off....but i cut all the good leather off it as i knew it would come in useful...so thats what i use when i need a leather washer...it cocks and fires soooo smoothly now ...very pleased with it so far....will asseble it and put the scope on to see what it looks like before i give it to my mate for him to make a leather sling for it..

if the power does go up its no sweat to whip another coil off it.....nige has his other ones on a fac...so he wont be doing time............the onlything he will be doing time for is stalking fat sarah..:lol:

all assembled now...........havnt shot any targets yet........as the gun will now go to my mate who will make a nice plain leather adjustable shoulder strap for it with sold brass buckles....he will also match the colour of the stock (near enough) to the leather work......

so more or less it is done..........one thing i will say ...it is a total crying shame that they (bsa) decieded to make cheap plastic sights for it..........ive seen better stuff come out of a bloody cheap xmas cracker.......such a shame......................so there you have it ...

a classic English air rifle Mercury Mod' "S" .22 Calibre

i will post the finished article up when its all done..

cheers for watching

So are you using molyslip on the piston seal and the cylinder?

Used graphite in my Rem but considering stripping it back down and using molyslip instead of the graphite powder. It's still low on power but to be fair its not had a great deal of lead through it since.

It's on my list to do, I've another for spares as some bits are totally knackered but I want to retain as much of the original as I can

You need a full moon, a ruck sack full of spring cabbage, half a dozen dead moles and two crème brûlée down yer pants.

Look you pair if you need any extra help just ask the expert. It's tough going these days now she's matured a bit more.
