And how do you do that with children with multiple and complex special educational needs?

Genuinely, because it is not working at my wife's work for the past six weeks or so.

Very difficult for your wife and you have my sympathy

however there’s a lot of kids that don’t have a problem not getting anything

a solution needs to be found to get them back

What they could do is first 15 kids start 8am/2pm  then another 15 kids 2pm/8pm rolling on 7day Rota  scrap the 7week summer holidays for 2 weeks it would mean recruiting ex teachers back but can't see a problem there as thousands of ex NHS have returned. It's not ideal but the kids got to catch up

There’s plenty working 7 days at the moment if that’s what it takes so be it

how would it be if the factory down the road said no !!!

they have been tasked to make respirators 7 days a week 24 hours a day

it’s unprecedented time and they will have to learn its a new time and things are changing

That's my thinking the world is a different place now & we all have adapt.

I can see your thoughts but it wouldn't work, kids aren't going to stay at school till 8pm although morning and afternoon is probably better than nothing.  Problem is space, the "groups" all stay together in one space, you couldn't clean sufficiently between the two classes.

We have an hour between shifts at the moment with cleaners coming in between and wiping down any touch points, I'm not sure its needed given we are all being very thoughtfull with hand washing,  but as numbers increase then the risk goes up. Luckily being a large firm it's all being taken very seriously,  I doubt small firms will be going to these lengths or expenses.

I should have added the problem of having kids of different ages,  if you've got children not in the years going back to school then your still not going to be able to return to work,  my kids would be able to go because me and Mrs mouse are both key workers but others probably won't be able to work shorter hours to suit kids doing half days and arrange child care.

Its certainly not straight forward at all.

This is nothing new at all, most places doing that will have done it before,  I did 3 on 3 off for four years, brilliant shift pattern if it works for you.

I’m sure you can build family members into the class they may even be able to help teach their young brother/ sister who’s to know that the experience may encourage them to be teachers of the future

I appreciate it’s difficult

however not insurmountable

It’s all going to be a bit of a compromise and the whole structure of working and having kids in education maybe have to change in the future

That's the key. Everybody is going to have to adapt to new ways of working but some unions are very adverse to that and see it as the Governments problem to solve.

Get together and work out a plan

maybe halving the kids and go in on alternate days

keep kids in groups and one classroom for that group just swapping teachers for the different subjects

Teaching them personally hygiene could be lesson one

there’s plenty of different jobs going on that have the same problem with the equal risks

or even kids in one day a week and give them a weeks project

teacher's are the brain training for the country

its time for you to step up to the mark and do it

tin hat on

Far too sensible and practical 👍

The teaching situation really isn't rocket science (you wouldn't even need to a degree in Teaching to work it out).

Start on the basis that those teachers who can go back to work do so, you know a bit like everyone else in workplace.

The schools on an individual basis fit their teaching schedule around what teachers they do have.

Pull in external teaching resources where major gaps exist, if it's gonna last a while scan the workforce with suitable skills currently on furlough, get them the pre-requisite training and clearance then get them to work at the schools

I wasn't around the last time we were "at war" but with a bit of determination and drive these and other issues can be overcome quite easily.

If individual teachers refuse to go back to school in the absence of medical or health grounds then put them on significantly reduced pay with a path to redundancy

For those with genuine medical / health issues work out a compromise reflecting the fact that the world has changed and they don't have a right to continue to be paid indefinitely

Sorry, but discussions like this do nothing to alter the often misplaced public perception that Teachers tend to be a bit work shy in the first place

This is the problem with the furlough mechanism, make it too comfy and you'll struggle to get people back to work

And before anyone goes apoplectic, yes of course there are exceptions but by definition they are not the norm...

There is more resting on this than just teaching the kids, which is in itself very important of course.

Without the schools opening and operating at some kind of level then vast amounts of the workforce are locked out of work too because of the need for childcare

Everybody has a duty and obligation to do their bit.

you are correct nobody has the right to be paid indefinitely but they do have the right to be kept safe this is not about education it’s about child care so people can go back to work if it’s that safe why are local councils telling people to avoid the lake district beaches and such are they scaremongering?

Because they are not nessecary or essential at this moment going to work is

I’m pretty sure going to a beach or the Lake District can wait a few more weeks

i have every sympathy for teachers you are clearly going to be bullied into a unsafe work place i hope you all survive

And the award for the most dramatic post of the year goes tooooooooo...🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

I’ve not been bullied to go back and according to some on here, I’m contributing to spreading ‘death and destruction’ - we, like schools, start back on 1st of June

And  have to ask the dentist if he feels safe

If your a key worker then your kids would all be in one group, so siblings together, I can't see the school's putting older kids in with younger ones simply because it will add significantly to the numbers although at the moment I doubt very much everyone will send their kids in anyway.

That while in theory sounds good its totally impractical,  it would take longer than a few weeks to check and vet people, although they could possibly use high school teachers to help in the primary schools.

Have you ever tried getting fifteen 5 or 6 year olds to do something?

Yes the schools need to go back, but rushing things isn't going to help.

hello, if Mc Cluskey had his way he would want all his Union members staying home until the Epidemic passed but the how many Companies can afford the cost that will be implemented in August, Bankruptcies in the UK are on the rise,

Liverpool have said schools will not reopen.

Guessing this is from the unions or the mayor.

I did say if it's gonna go on a while, you mentioned a few weeks, I meant several months. I do agree it would be a challenge though, it was just an idea if the situation looks like persisting.

Not much experience with large groups of kids, but I'm fully proficient at "herding cats" based on my career 🙂

Define safe? What do the HSE say about this, what are the working guidelines around this kind of thing? Let the experts make the call and accept their assessment...

It seems that the BMA also agrees with the NEU, or are they now also suddenly downgraded from ‘heroes’ to ‘cowards’ for failing to toe the gov’t line? https://www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-doctors-back-teachers-fears-over-schools-reopening

certainly can’t argue with those on the front line thanks for that expert opinion from those more than qualified to make the call on if teachers are safe think that answers it for us
