Read an article yesterday saying that each job vacancy has 50 people applying for it. That sounds low to me. I know a couple of people who work in HR for the major banks. They said that pre-covid, for some of their specialist roles, they might have 10-20 applicants. Now they are getting 500+.

It's just high fliers who've had enough of working from home and want to get back in an office 😉

It's hard to judge. I don't want to use the the phrase 'unprecedented situation' as I'm sick and tired of it, but in this case very accurate.

There is going to be a recession of sorts, but how deep and how the recovery will look is very much open to debate.

I think that as well as people applying for jobs due to increase in redundancies, there will be more than a few looking to get the jump on widespread job losses and getting a few irons in the fire as it were but whose job is not immediately (and potentially not at all) at risk.

One thing I am not missing about not working is the stress. I didn’t really realise it but my jobs have been quite stressful and since I stopped in February I I am feeling far more chilled out and sleeping better. Still think I want to go back to work though.

Probably one for the positive column then, you've been forced to stay home and its actually helped you, might be worth thinking about long term.

Yea it’s weird but I didn’t really think I was stressed at work and I think I still want to go back to work. We probably need a bit of stress (or a challenge) in our lives.

I used to think that too until i had a years garden leave and then I appreciated actually how stressed I was.  It is personal to everyone, but i need a bit of stress at work and actually perform a lot better when under stress too, but work stress is different from say travel stress or trying to fit everything in at home stress when you have so much time travelling/away from home.

During lockdown and working from home the work stress has been the same, which is good as i need that, but the other stresses have been so much less which is brilliant and very welcome.

As for the jobs situation, I am gravely worried that we are very soon going to witness a desperately challenging time for millions of people who would otherwise never expect to be in the position they will find themsleves in.

I can understand you want to go back, but would you want it to be the same?

If your family were at school, the wife able to work or go out,  so everyone not having to be under each other's feet then you might look at things differently.

Reading how others have said they are not missing 1hrs 30min travel to and from work,  that's 3hrs a day lost and more if there are delays, that to me would be more than enough stress.

Something is surely going to happen when the furlough payments change? I'm hoping things aren't going to be as bleak as some have predicted but I'm going permanent rather than contracting,  its going to cost me money but it's about security at the moment.

I absolutely don’t miss the commute but I also don’t want to work from home full time. Wfh just doesn’t work that well for me. Ideally I’d have a similar job with a reasonable local commute but that isn’t going to happen. And if we are choosing our ideal environment it would be 6 months working/6 months not. That is possibly more achievable but it really depends on the jobs situation. I was fearful from day 1 and haven’t changed unfortunately.

I'm of a like mind, for about 4 years or so I had been doing portfolio type work that involed really intense bits of work with different companies then time off and that was really great from a work/life balance perspective, just horribly unpredicatble which brought it's own issues.

The last couple of years i have been doing part time interim roles which has been fine as it was typically 3 days a week and 4 days off, but recently that has become full time which has meant staying away from home a lot and that becomes wearying too.  The ideal balance for me really is that 3 day week, but it is a luxury that is afforded to few and i have been lucky.

6 months working/6 month not would also be good, especially if working in the winter, but much like Mice in his post above the uncertainty of the times to come is making me very much question what is appropriate rather than what is desired.

I think Mungler summed it up well in the other thread, a LOT of companies have now been able to see how far they can cut their workforce back and still deliver their service, they'll also get an idea of their employees when the end of the furlough comes (and identify the ones who'll find some excuses to have another few days or weeks of paid leave) , I think there'll be a lot of streamlining going on over the next 6-12 months and a lot of people will get a shock.

  • 1 month later...

Working for a company that sells pricing software (or revenue management for those in the know) globally I note that there is an accelerating shift towards what has been coined 'digital commerce'.   This has far-reaching implications for the workplace and is literally re-writing the way enterprises do business not only in the UK but across the world and all concurrently too.   It was always going to happen sooner or later just no-one imagined it would be this quick.

The retail high-streets will mostly die, it was already a pretty dire business sector pre-lockdown and the shift to people doing almost all purchasing on-line became almost 100% outside of groceries.   Companies that have clung to traditional business models and have not actively embraced the internet (been with us about 27 years now) as a primary commercial route to market will surely whither away, wiped out by more agile competitors.

The challenge now is that all businesses are linked by money and if there is less need for it to be spent then everybody suffers. Are we in recession?  Yes we are - absolutely no doubt about that.

Hello, the latest job vacancies are 330,000, 1 company had 10,000 applicants for a skilled engineer, 🤔 is this termed as the new recession

It was like this in the early eighties I asked the boss why don't we set some apprentices on he replied why should I the job centre is full of skilled men.

The early eighties will be #### all to compare what is in front of us.
