stokie
My 13 year old nephew who for about 5 months has been coming decoying with me is lying in a hospital bed awaiting a heart transplant . He started with a cough about 8 weeks ago and no other symptoms He has leaking heart valves and over the last 3 weeks has deteriorated so fast its unbearable. He has been sent straight to the top of the organ transplant list. The reason for this post is not for sympathy but because today he was seen by a micro biologist who states that something unknown has caused this. One of the questions asked was has he been on any farm land . What the hell is that all about.
Yorkshire Pudding
I'm sorry to hear about your nephew , and i wish him all the luck in the world in finding a suitable heart . Have a look at organophosphate poisoning . Now i am not a micro biologist , but it would be the first place i would look . all the best yis yp
stokie
The highs and lows to date Seems the virus could have come from the farm and the micro biologist was most concerned that he had been handelling dead pigeons. They are unsure as to what it was as massive doses of anti biotics cleared it before it could be identified Adam got his wish and a new heart was found last week to which he started to make a fantastic recovery. 10 hours after the op he was sitting up in bed smiling . He has since had a few minor set backs which he has pulled through without a problem . I saw him this friday and he was walking around the bed begging me to take him shooting as soon as he is well. Then saturday morning he sat bolt upright shouting for help , he then had a stroke and his heart stopped the doctors did a fantastic job and after 90 mins of heart massage and surgery he is alive and on life support. Where they are letting him rest. The new heart is still ok . The doctors were concerned about brain damage because he was technically dead for some time but early signs are good as the brain is functioning. He will be kept on the machines for the next seven days then slowly woken up to see what happens Thank god the stubborn little **** wont give up. My thoughts and thanks go out to the family of the donor heart Thanks for reading and sorry for boring you as its helped me to share it with others
al4x
It won't be down to Organo Phosphate poisoning IMHO as it tends to have long term effects rather than this. Sounds like an Infection and there are all sorts of nasties on farms, e-coli and salmonella occur naturally with livestock. Fingers crossed for him it sounds like you've been to hell and back with it.
Teal
Hi Stokie- really sorry to hear about your nephews illness. He deserves to make a full recovery after this lengthy ordeal. If it was a virus then I don't think antibiotics would have cleared it though.
Country Boy
Hi Stokie, Very sorry to hear about your young nephew's leaking heart valves, but glad the transplant went OK I hope he makes a quick recovery from the viral infection. Hospitals don't seem to be too clean today do they? Its a damned scandle! Best wishes. C.B. :~)

stokie
The doctors seemed concerned that he may have been in contact with dead pigeons whilst out shooting rather than the land itself . Saying that they can carry disease that can be transmitted to humans which in turn could of attacked his already vunerable heart valve. Lots of ifs and buts i know but it still makes you think. The donor heart has since failed and he is back on life support awaiting another match. The donor heart doesnt have to be of the same age. But the closer the better. They have to be the same blood type and more than 95% tissue type The dedication of the doctors and nursing staff is faultless and they have not given up hope . Althou his odds of survival are now reduced we have to carry on as best we can for the sake of his twin brother and younger sister
lurcherboy
I have just come across your thread Stokie and I sincerely hope that the lad gets a new one and all ends up well  Regarding the pigeon question, I am aware that feral pigeons are very dangerous to humans in particular breathing the **** they can carry which can cause serious respiratory disease, but I have never heard of woodies causing the same problems. Perhaps the doctors meant pigeons in general or didn't know the difference? Anyway hope the little lad makes a full recovery and can go shooting with you again. stokie
The boy lives to fight another day He had another heart transplant yesterday . Heart working fine but his kidneys have shut down which in turn is causing lung problems. Hes having dialasis to help his kidneys which in turn will help the lungs to clear. But for now a ventilator is doing the breathing. His chances are about 50/50 . Not good odds but better than last weeks How much more this human pin cushion take is beyond belief. stokie
Thanks guys for all your replies Great news Adams recovery is well under way and next week he is coming home . The next few months he has to take it easy and not be in contact with lots of people. His lungs are not 100% but the rest of him is now functioning. He will have to take anti rejection drugs for the rest of his life but dont you think thats a small price to pay. Doctors have said he can go shooting when strong enough but cannot touch anything that has been shot or be transported in any car that is carrying anything dead in it. But hey his mum has told him that shooting is now banned . So it looks like im gonna take up fishing as he is a passionate angler My thanks go out again to the donor family. Just a thought , how many people carry a donor card on here
