Dave at kelton
It is really a matter of which suits you best. Two main favourites are Nikon, or Cannon. I preferred the Nikon when I first bought one as it just felt better in the hands so worth handling a couple of cameras before you decide. I now have two Nikon’s, and a variety of lenses. First I bought new 14 years ago and it is still going strong. I added lenses and decided to buy a second body off the bay last November at about £100 and it is great. I started with a body and two basic Nikon lenses but if I was starting again I would buy a body with an 18-270 mm lense, being the one I use most. You don’t need a massively expensive body if you are generally snapping and not taking it super seriously. Tecobuy have a d3500 and the extra lense on offer at about about £550. Add a good bag and a spare battery and you are a little over your budget. There are more expert photographers on here than me so will doubtless also comment Good luck and happy snapping
Ultrastu
Nikon d7500 Aps sized sensor not full frame so makes it a bit smaller and lighter .image quality is amazing . I coupled mine with a sigma 17 - 70 fixed f 2.8 lens .which is awesome in low light and still compact .
Ultrastu
Thing is phones these days are really good at low light photography and do a fantastic job of hdr images making for great photos in difficult light . Most dslrs can't compete in the multi image hdr shots . And for the average snapper your phone will win hands down . Where the dslr wins is for pure image quality .if you want to see your images large on screen or in print over say A4 then the dslr is the way to go . And to that end I'd choose a camera with a good body(good sensor ) that can shoot In low light and couple that with a versatile lens that can also shoot in low light add a decent zoom lense also if your into sports or action stuff . billytheghillie
Thanks guys, was looking at Nikon D5600 as that is within my budget, as for phones, i use a cheap motorola and dont take pics with it as it has a carp camera, but i see what you mean Ultrastu . Ultrastu
Just looked at the specs on the nikon d5600 and it looks like a pretty good camera for the money. Couple it with the 18- 140 lens for a good all rounder .best thing is it has snap bridge capable .which is a great app that I use . You pair the camera to your phone .and go out taking photos ..when you look at your phone they are all there loaded up ready to share or edit .it's really good . bruno22rf
Buy a used one, not an awful lot to wear out on a DSLR. For the price of new you might pick up a nice outfit with decent lenses, Nikon of course but Canon are much the same.

Hector Vector
I recently abandoned my DSLR in favour of a decent "Bridge" camera, no regrets at all. Purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2000 and it's a lovely bit of kit. Does everything my DSLR could and then some. It's particularly good on the video side of things. Only downside is it's a little bit bulky but I can live with that. Worth considering a bridge camera perhaps?
johnphilip
Camera brands are like music taste , it's how the final image looks you can take the same picture of the same subject . Using 2 cameras say the nikon or the Canon at the same price range , both images will be good , but different , that's were the choosing comes in . You need to see pictures and then choose the brand that suits your taste, There is a well respected company that sells used camera gear , that comes with a good warranty . It's called MPB. Com You can pay lots of money for a camera it may have more features. More buttons etc , but the image results can be just the same on a cheaper camera . Going secondhand with the money you say you could get a good camera and lens for that money . I have the nikon d5600 . Does all I want . I help run a Facebook group for that camera we are at 23k members so something must be right .

This is my specialised subject, as I earned a very good living as a pro photographer for a very long time . . . The "full frame" cameras are larger and heavier but produce much higher image quality than the ones with the smaller sensors (APS sensors for example have 330 sq mm of sensor compared to 864 sq mm of the full frame cameras) and sensor size makes more difference to image quality than anything else. I agree, if you really do want a DSLR then go for a second-hand one. Right now you can get something like a Nikon D3 for about £300, it's a genuine pro camera that cost £5000 new and and it will work just as well as when it was new. WinchesterDave
I remember, many years ago looking at my first DSLR. I was set on a Sony camera. Picked one up, could not figure out how to use it. I then Went to look at a Nikon and Canon… Having handled them both, decided on the Canon EOS system. So simple and intuitive to use and it was that which made my decision. The image quality and reliability have been 10/10 and I have upgraded my Canon EOS cameras a few times over the years to the point where I now run two - an EOS 7d Mark ii APSC Sensor and an EOS 6D full frame Sensor camera. I also have an EOS M3 Compact System Camera with an APSC sensor. If you are new to DSLRs, the buttons, setting, lens options etc can be quite daunting and having a genuinely simple and intuitive system helps the process of learning greatly. As said, there are plenty of good used cameras about which will be in your price range. Dave 👍
Agriv8
So Nikon for me D80’s, D90, D7100 and currently D7200 all been reliable apart from 7100 which died with shutter failure. ( but generally likley to be caused by abuse from me ) My son is currently playing with a D80. An Slr is very much like shooting it vey easy to get wrong and it takes practice to master it and even then you will make mistakes ( this is where point and shoot phones win ) My advice would be a second hand d300s or similar and 18-140 lenses the VR is a help - but if you expect to point and shoot a slr may not be what you are looking for even on the auto modes ! Where snouts are you as someone on here may have something to lend you so you can have a play ? ATB Agriv8
