Downforce
Hi i have a small antler I’d like to use on a staff but with it being relatively fine looking for a Ash (or ?) staff that’s not going to look too thick when joining to the antler Never done anything like that before so have a rough idea from YouTube but would appreciate anyone who is expert providing any help / tips D
gamekeeper1960
Hi Downforce, shame you're not closer to North Norfolk as I would have sorted you something out you might be better off looking for a blackthorn shank as you will get strength from a thinner size..but other than saying drill out the antler (depending on how thick it is at the base) and either glue in a length of thread or taper and glue the shank to it ...have fun... Walker570
As above. It makes a very good strong connection and then you can bring the diameters together. A large brass washer the same diameter also looks good set between the two.

Actually - we do have relatives that will probably be travelling to North Norfolk for Christmas with the family so may be able to do something if thats practical I could ask them where exactly they'll be and if its feasible to meet up? Thanks also to everyone for the feedback and tips - I really want to make a nice job of it D
Stimo22
I prefer blackthorn myself for sticks but twisted hazel are the most popular.

Stimo22
Yes, I make a few, mostly blackthorn and a few twisted hazel. Sell a few at a local clay shoot. Most give to mates as thank you gifts.

D That certainly doesn't leave you a lot to play with when it comes to what length you need as the bottom is going to be very thin.. no you don't need to square it off you can just cut the top of your stick to the same angle as the base of your antler..but with a lack of thickness to it,your adjoining rod is going to have to be thin.. Do you have an idea what length you are looking for and I'm thinking that as it's oval in shape possibly a Holly shank might work... Cheers DB.. Downforce
I should also say this isnt going to get taken out into harsh and extreme envirinments every day, although I do intend to use it from time to time its main job is to be on display. oowee
Hard to judge from the picture the size. I have just picked up some bits in the shed which if not medals will be close to and they are barely any thicker. The head on the top of the three heads in the first picture is a good silver (measured) for comparison and the others are at the least very close to it. Whilst a bit thicker its not so much. If you PM me your address I will gladly post an antler to you in return for a picture of the finished article on here.

gamekeeper1960
I have just been straightening a sticks that I have found out that is Damson plum not blackthorn but it is a fraction over the 20mm (about 21mm) but it is just over the 5' there is a little cracking on the end but this could be removed and I'm sure will be perfectly usable though a little flimsy...if this is a any use you are welcome...
