Currently stripping down the furniture on my 525. It’s taking a lot of work, done 4 coats of nitro mors and removed it with a scouring pad. It’s only just taken the shine off. Am I doing something wrong?

IF it is already an oiled finish, then yes. I presume you are talking about the wood when you use the term 'furniture'.

Furniture usually referred to the top lever, trigger guard and bottom plate (action). Search stock refinishing on YouTube.

No. Well other than living in a post COSHH world (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health). Today's Nitromors is useless. I now use Bartoline TX10. Not as good as the old Nitromors but better at least that the modern Nitromors.

Nitro mors isn’t worth buying nowadays unfortunately. EU legislation put paid to its effectiveness.

This. What you need is either a time machine of to get to know some old boy like "Ted in his shed" who maybe used "to do a bit with wood" ten years ago and has some of the old Nitromors lurking on a shelf.

You can start with a coarser grade of steel wool, but I always finish with 0000 grade very fine steel wool. This, when used with a drop of stock oil, will smooth the wood without leaving any scratch marks. It can also be used with light oil to remove any surface rusting on the metalwork. Used with light oil, it does not damage the blueing. Always rub with the grain on the woodwork.

Make a scraper from an old hacksaw blade. Using the back edge, you can hold it using 2 hands and pulling it towards you gently scrape away the old finish. The hacksaw blade is flexible enough to bend around some of the curve of the wood.

Im presently sorting out the wood on the 16g SxS I got from @wabbitbosher

this had an oil finish which I removed with meths and a toothbrush coupled with a bit of scraping with an old credit card.

tried acetone, thinners, IPA, white spirit all to no avail

i have heard that to remove oil from a wood stock.....among other actions you can use thinners and then cover it with Fullers earth ?

Chemically that would work....but I didn't have any Fullers. I was surprised the acetone failed as that is how I removed soaked in oil from the action on my BERNADELLI, sucked it right out 😇

Maybe my Bayard 16g was not just oil? It did have something else encroaching onto the metal that left a stain
