The thing that I find well funny is that in my professional corporate life I'm generally seen as pretty hardline non-PC and corporately speaking anti-woke. Refusing to "play the game" and being true to my principles is openly discussed in my year end reviews as a reason for not reaching my full potential on the career ladder. The only time I've ever been part of a trade union was a brief stint in the railways where it wasn't "safe" to work in that environment if you refused to join. Had the displeasure to meet Bob C and worked on the other shift pattern to one of his "wing-men" at the time, Mick Lynch. These debates on various subjects arent going to fix the problems in society, I dont think anything is, not voting, not 'taking to the streets'. Change starts within us, by understanding one another better. People get frustrated because they see this path towards the time when Rome will burn, and they realise there isnt a lot we can do to avert it. Sweet11-87 Posted July 22 Report Share Posted July 22 ive no horse in the race regarding the riots as i dont have all the facts, but i did enjoy the parts of this thread where people showed their age bracket and demographic by referring to i Phones as a luxury.... just generic "they all have iphones" and that's used as a measure of how good someone is and managing finances. as a baseline you can get the latest iphone on a 24 month contract for £50-£70 a month or about what you'll average pay for a weeks shopping. the same things that about 4 years ago was £40-£50 and take it back to the house you rent at £1200 a month paying a landlord vastly more than you can get a mortgage approved for,Or instead of shopping get a take away as it is a more convenient food option given that both adults in a household MUST work full time now to float the cost of living without getting swamped in debt. but yeah iphones and takeaways thats whats wrong with this generation and the reason were in the state were in. the fact the council housing all got sold off in the late 80s for buttons and are now being used/sold by private firms and landlords to leather the incomes of the working population has nowt to do with it. Secondary schools don't even have kitchens for domestic science anymore but will teach you how to read calorie charts. It's pretty hard to do that when you don't have a phone. Even the system of staying in contact with the job centre sensibly requires a phone. It's unnecessary. that's what im getting at. that's the more extreme end of the iPhone spectrum, most phone contracts will get you a smart phone from last years wave of models for like £30-£40 older or even less, and quite frankly if you can get by in 2024 without a smart phone that's not fairly modern that's impressive. Its not essential but not having one makes life infinity more difficult. most banks, job applications, correspondence, nhs facilities, work based communication and organization pushes you towards self serve via an app. the alternative to this is having a desktop or laptop which is arguably more costly and less convenient than a phone. i use weekly if not daily 7 apps on my phone that id struggle without and i work blue collar graft outside for a living. everything from google maps to find the site im working on to a tailored app to do my risk assessments and equipment checks. its the way the world is now. they are a necessary financial outgoing not a luxury. some employers proved them most dont. I'm happy to learn that as last I heard that had all been shelved. 15 years old when I left school and was ridiculed in cookery class by the teacher, as my mother had sent me with a note to ask if I could watch as the end product was pigs belly which we didn't eat and couldn't afford to buy if we wearnt eating it. Instead she told me to iron her husband's shirts at the back of the class. I refused and was sent home. From Auntie.
