Baikal O/U stocks

I see on Holts there are plenty of Baikal O/U going cheap.

Some have "ordinary" stocks and some have a type of Monte Carlo stock.   I am of average build and most off the shelf guns fit me reasonably well.  Has anyone got any experience of either type of stock, which should I go for???  No DTL for me, the gun would be for skeet\sporting, pigeons and wildfowling.

Cheers

Both Baikals I have I find are "short" in the length of stock and need extensions for me at least. Says he looking for the auction 😉

Oldy, at the moment I have used AYA SxS for the last few years plus a Win SXP pump.  Just fancied a dabble with an OU to see if it upped my rather poor skeet scores!

Check out Bamford of Eccleston website. They have a Winchester Diamond grade skeet for Baikal money. I know which is the better gun, by far.

Cheers Wesley. Had a quick look but by the time  I add rfd fees at both ends that £295 becomes £350 or so and the holts baikals are going for £50 or less and I’d only have to pay £20 rfd fee if I wait until they are up here in Inverness. Quality though as you say is a world apart!

There are, frankly, even at Holt's better O/U guns that a Baikal. Now Baikal side by sides I've had a few the 2 3/4" Magnum ejector. But their over and under guns are horrible. So unless it is because it is a Baikal I'd really look at some of the Italian and Spanish guns. Sarriugarte are very very well made and make hardly any money.

Enfieldspares, are they really that bad?  (clearly I have never picked one up!)   Had a Lanber years back, maybe just look for one of those instead.

Hello, Did you check out all Holts unsold O/U shotguns, There was a Baikal skeet gun in that list, and one with 2 Barrels

I might’ve misunderstood this - What I assume you’re talking about is they charge a fee (£10 I think) for bringing one of your purchases to a valuation day for you to collect.  No need to involve an RFD.  The other option is to have them ship it to your local RFD, for which they charge handsomely to pack and ship it, £45 IIRC.  Plus then you have the RFD fee at the other end.

Starts to take the shine off ‘cheap’ Holts guns, unless you are close enough for the third option, collecting in person in darkest Norforkshire.

What would say though, is having cast my eye over the Holts unsold lots, they appear to have a few Hungarian FEGs.  These are, in my experience, better quality than Baikals and can handle reasonably well.  I know, I’ve got one.  Kills things and dusts clays when I point it in the right place.  At 1.75 m tall and didn’t play rugby at school, I’m not what the kids would call ‘hench’ but the FEGs appear to be a reasonable stock length, and higher comb than, say a silver pig.  But, again, really you should probably go round local RFDs and ask to try their ‘bargain bucket’/trade-ins if you’re after something cheap but that still fits.

Yep the FEGs look a better bet, I did some research and apparently made in Hungary by the main Hungarian arms manufacturer.

Re Holts RFD charges, their rep lives in Inverness so I wait until he goes down to them or they come up here with stuff for him.  All I then need to pay is a RFD fee to the rep as he is an RFD dealer in his own right, think he charged me £20 last time which is way cheaper than the local gunshop RFD

Southam's is now online. Both the main sale and the Newnham Street sale. Lots of O/U there.

For me, yes, too bloomin' short in the stock and too much drop at the heel. My thought is that their real purpose wasn't so much the shooting flying we do in he UK but for shooting ground game (think rabbits and hares), sitting fowls, and maybe deer using the thing almost as if it were a rifle with heavy charges of large sized shot.

You forgot 'jacking up the tractor' as one of their uses  ?

I have yet to see ANY Baikal that was high enough in the comb for any normally built person........now if you had no neck   ?

Well the FEG arrived much more promptly than expected.   I took it out for a few clays this morning and was very pleasantly surprised by it.  The build quality is very very good and I am so glad I got the FEG over the Baikal so cheers for the advice guys!

Excellent result, especially as you bought ‘blind’ as it were, based on a Holt’s listing.  Do you know what model you got?
