Strangely enough my meter box is on my neighbours side right beside his one , he came home last night and checked the figures on both his and mine , his one was raised about 5 / 6 inches above the water pipe which made it a lot easier to read as he done what T C advised by taking a photo on his smart phone and then enlarging it , mine was a lot harder as the glass on the meter was badly cracked and you could only just make out parts of the number , on my bill it stated it was a actual reading on the 20th August , when I looked earlier on the week it was covered in dust and cobwebs which had been there a lot longer than just over two weeks , mind you the arrow was going around when everything was turned off in my house so I have got a leak of some sorts , now waiting until the inspector turn up in two weeks time .     :good:

Good luck.

Short the way they react so quickly for such leaks?

Good for the shareholders bonuses no doubt?

I don't think my phone will go down the pavement hole anyway?

Yer , we certainly are not short of veg and the berries come to that , some of the various bottles of so called wine that are brought on shoot days would not suit the faint hearted , my excuse for turning it down was I was driving the guns about and it wouldn't help if I got stopped in a vintage army lorry with at least a dozen people on board , although I still had to avoid the booze when the guns had there's for there 11s , no , I am happy with my energy drink and I have to have a clear head to make sure the ones holding the guns are safe to do so , no problems up to now and long may it continue that way       MM

Any further developments MM?

No afraid not T C , the water inspector is coming to mine next Wednesday between 7 am and 1pm , I have no doubt got a leak of sorts but where and how much we will have to wait and see , if the meter was read like they say it was then I will want to know why the meter wasn't reported in having all the glass cracked and the meter itself is un readable . roll on next Wednesday .:good:

hello, Then I suggest you keep track of the readings and when you get a bill if they have over estimated ask for a refund, if lower then check next bill so you do not have a sudden high amount to pay, I suggest anyone with a water meter to keep track of reading same as gas and electric, TWA tried to sneak in a high reading to my Son by saying it was for future use ??, He got a full refund,

What was the outcome of the water company visitation Marshman? Do they agree something is drastically wrong with the meter? Giving you big refunds?

The meter man came yesterday morning as promised , he read my meter and said it had gone up 30 units since it was last read , he did declare it had a broken glass but it shouldn't effect the meter which I queried , he turned the water off in my house and the needle was still going round so he expected a leak between there meter and my stop tap , he did arrange a new meter to be fitted within the next three working days and the workmen will dig around four feet into my supply to trace the direction of the water supply , he was only the meter reader and didn't have much idea where the water in the leak was going and so on , but he was a friendly young man and told me not to worry about the payment for the wasted water , so getting any refund will be difficult and the best I can hope for is they find the leak close to where they dig it up , failing that it could end up as an insurance job which you helpful guys will be bombarded with even more questions .

So THANKS for asking and I will let you know when my new meter is fitted .  A t b   MM

How long was the period from last reading to using 30 units? 30 units in my case takes 14 months. The amount you have lost is huge both in water and money. They should access you as a single household over recent years and refund the thousands you have overpaid! £250 a year at a maximum is what you should pay. It makes me think your meter may feed other properties nearby but unlikely. The huge amounts you’re losing would cause major problems to the surface I would think, thousands of gallons unaccounted for unless the meter it over reading by a lot.Either way challenge them for reimbursement.

As a guide for a single person over 6 months (January to July 2024) with normal washing etc, laundry, dishwasher, occasional weekend visitors, 6 months bill was made up as follows;

  1. Fresh water via meter, 13 cubic metres = £23.33
  2. Surface water and highway drainage = £32.68
  3. Waste water drainage = £15.73

Total bill for 6 months £71.74

Average daily spend £0.39

Note that my roof gutters mainly flow into the drainage, so I have to pay item 2 above.  IF your roof drainage is done by soakaway or similar, this section can be avoided, but my house has always had all the drainage combined and it is too difficult to change to separate roof water and foul water.  It is quite a big house, so this is the largest cost for me.  Overall around £145 - 150 per year.  Water authority is Severn Trent.

The last actual reading was on the 20th Aug 2024 , so the 30 units have been used in just over a month , you can see by the bill for what they were charging me for , the bottom one was the sewage charge , well if I had a leak then the water wouldn't had been going down the sewer , as you can see they have , or are charging me £696.74 , it's bad enough charging me the amount of water let alone the sewer charge which only had one persons amount going down the drains , and then the young chap said yesterday , don't lose any sleep over the bill  , I have put a smiley on but t b h it is no longer a laughing matter , the bill is bad enough but the volume of water they say is going around my house is becoming a worry .   MM

In other words the meter has recorded over 10 times as much as you actually used! If it’s a leak then 173 gallons a day is going somewhere, and 15 gallons you are probably using! However long this has been going on they owe you £2.50 a day approximately.
Shame you didn’t raise the problem sooner,as your bank balance would be healthier.
