thats the kiddie

any spud with the name "Maris" infront of it was bred/developed at the NIAB Cambridge (national institute of agricultural botany)

Maris do make good chips, but has anyone tried chips from Cabaret potatoes?

In my opinion, and that is backed up by many first place wins at our local "chip off" competition where growers bring in their best variety to be fried, tasted and judged, they are the muts nuts.

Cabaret are a cross of marris piper and morag, so good dry matter spuds resulting in an even cook colour, crispy exterior and white fluffy centre. Just the best.  I'll try to remember to photo some next time I do some

Good choice on the fryer Ditchy.  Looks similar to mine and I love it.

i shall be doing some Black country chips soon......boiled ....sliced potatoes then dipped in a thick batter and deep fried ...and served with thickly battered  fish with lashings of malt vinegar...and white pepper

does that float yer boat ?

Those are known as battered scallops in the black country ( i always assumed it was the same everywhere).

For fish and chips,  you only need salt and vinegar , and a blob of red sauce if you're feeling particularly exotic.

I like battered scallops , just as long as they aren't too thick , and they're nice and crunchy . If they're thin and undercooked , they're just greasy hot potato .

i use rapeseed.............

the machine is soo easy to clean and filter the oil.....if i dont use the fryer for a few days i heat it up for 10 mins......the element and controller are joined and it just simply lifts off....then you lift the stainless bowl out...filter it ...return the oil and lower the element in...jobs a gooden............i use a french coffee press to clean the oil.....and i will cook in it about 7 to 9 times depending what ive been cooking in it

Interesting.  I always used Cotswold cold pressed rapeseed oil and found it great for about 2 or 3 years, then bought a new can and immediately began to get a taste of cabbage (the rapeseed is a brassica like cabbage).  It quite put me off using rape seed.  I have since been told that it does vary from season and variety and some do have a 'brassica' taste.  My fryer looked much like yours but took around 3 litres, so not a trivial amount.

I now use one of these which works very well on induction, but would be a bit risky on gas.

Same up here mel.

In the chippy, they sit next to the battered spam fritters, battered sausages and the fish cakes. Lovely!

Yes.  They do them at either (or maybe both) of the Black Country Museum - https://bclm.com/ (West Midlands) and/or the Beamish Museum - https://www.beamish.org.uk/   (NE England) where they have tradition old style fish and chip shops.

I cheat [sorry] and buy them from Waitrose already prepped. Triple Cooked Chips in beef fat is the description, and despite them being of the oven cooked variety, they are superb, definitely much more flavoursome than the 'ordinary' type 😃😋

So do Ocado/M&S. https://www.ocado.com/products/m-s-gastropub-triple-cooked-chips-in-beef-dripping-side-516766011

All the market chips used to done in beef dripping , maybe they still are and the one on the island ( Brewers ) was the same , I done bob a job for him once and had to cut the News Of The World in half and cart the cardboard boxes of lard into his shop , that fish and chip shop was always believed to be the best one in the area .   MM

A few chippy's round this way do chips in beef dripping , and they're fantastic,  but , they're not quited as good as the black country museum (two minutes up the road from me). The wait in the queue for fish and chips at the black country museum can be 1.5 hours , and is worth every minute .

I would consider them to be the very best fish and chips in the country . They were second best , until Leonards chippy in tywyn Wales closed down .

We don't call them scraps up here . It's batters or batter bits .  The last time I asked for batters , they charged me an extra 50p robbing xxxxxxxx🤬

I think I have had both Black Country and Beamish.  Black Country were certainly good and I don't remember a long queue, but it was a few years ago.

It's worth a visit just for the fish and chips.

They have two chips shops there now . One uses oil , and one uses dripping.

think what i will do next week is "scallops" (in a thick creamy batter) and gently fry in a mix of oil and Lurpak and black pepper a nice peice of tail of haddock..............have to go easy on the batter....and serve it up with Sarsons and a chunk of lemon over the fish...

i shall look forward to that

Might the black pepper just burn if you put it in the oil though 🤔

frying it on a very low heat ..the fish wont take long to cook...it will be nice and moist and a squeeze of lemon on it will be just the job...and all the batter and crispiness will be on the scallops...........

thats the idea anyway

The chips are just the right side of brown but would have preffered a runny yolk to dip them in. Reminds me of the home cooked meals of my childhood. Everything from the frying pan and the fryer.

All those processed seed oils and greasy food may have taken years from my life but the food was lovely I certainly enjoyed it at the time.😋

Who wants to live into their 90's anyway? It can't be much fun beyond 75, sat in a chair all day ******** ones self involuntarily..

Anything from 6/3 to 5/8 on the above chart posted by Tightchoke will be fine..

Noting that you are only 31 years old, I sincerely trust that when you get into your seventies, you will think very differently and hopefully are still quite active and cognisant.

As Marsh man has said, it`s all about being active and keeping oneself busy both physically and I would add mentally. I`m a similar age to Marsh man and my phone tells me that I average between 3 and 5 miles walking daily and try also to keep my mind active, so hopefully I`ve got a few years yet until I am unable to continue my current lifestyle, but one never knows what`s ahead so best to make the most of our time on this planet and take each day as it comes.

I am the wrong side of 75 and would often like the chance of sitting in a chair for long periods , at the moment I just haven't got the time , I average walking at least five miles a day and for many days I exceed that , we were shooting game all day last Saturday and with only three more to go I hope to end another season without missing a single day ,age is only a number and every ones number will be up day but I hope mine is well down the list , in the mean time I aim to get out as much of the day I can , one thing you cannot stop is time .   MM

Great stuff. I know so many people who are late 50's that are completely done having spent the last 30 years sat on their ***** in workingmen's clubs drinking ale and eating from the frying pan. Big pot bellies, knees that no longer work, constant back pain. I often drive past the local and see the same faces that I knew growing up. They'll be there, every day after work, either inside or outside swigging away on the gut rotter and chugging on cigs. That pub will effectively be their coffin.

The key is to stay mobile and keep the brain ticking over. I recently worked with a bloke in his mid 80's who manned a desk in the office for a few hours a day 4 days a week to keep himself busy. For an 85 year old he was fairly fit and bright as the sun but he finally retired at 86 with some pressure from his family to enjoy his life. He didn't make it to 87. He always said that it was work that was keeping him alive.

True. I work out in the gym 5 days a week and intend to do so until my body no longer allows me to.

I am effectively T total and don't smoke. If I do get to 75 then I intend to be in good enough health to allow me to enjoy it.

Good to hear that you are both out and getting on with it and long may it continue!

Thanks for your kind words .. Keeping yourself reasonably fit and active start way before you get into your later years , it's the lifestyle you live in the years before retirement that matters , walking a long distance just come natural when you enjoy it , I have always owned working Labradors and even now still look forward in taking them out , I used to smoke until I got married and then found it to expensive , I stopped overnight in my low 30s and never touched another cigarette again , same with drink , I liked a drink as much as anyone else but I used to work a lot after tea and use my motor every day , my livery hood involved driving every day so my drinking just got less and less and I never even realised I hadn't had a drink for ages , now apart from a pint of Shandy on ours shoot meal in February I don't have any more .

Keeping active and something to look forward to each day is the way forward , decent living and plenty of fresh air and you will make it well into your later years . :good:
