Shooting specs. Glasses

Afternoon all,

I normally wear varifocal specs for my everyday use and distance specs for driving and clay shooting, the opticians today suggested that as I wear varifocal for my everyday use I should continue to wear them for shooting as my eyes and brain were used to them. In particular a pair that have with polarised lens that I use when fishing.

This goes against all the previous advice that I have been told about shooting glasses, does any person on pigeon watch shoot with varifocal glasses without issues or problems and hit what they are shooting at.

Thanks in advance

Tim

I use varifocals on a daily basis and contact lenses for shooting - stalking, pigeon shooting and clay shooting.  When I’m feeling lazy and shoot with my varifocals, I find that my eyes alternate between focusing on what I’m shooting at and the top frame of my glasses.  If using glasses, I think you need a pair of Dennis Taylor jobs or specialist prescription frameless shooting glasses.

I shoot with 2 guys that DID wear varifocals.  Now they both have shooting glasses with prescription lens inserts. Their scores have improved dramatically.

My right eye prescription is pretty strong and took the plunge to get a set of pilla x6 with prescription insert , couldn’t get the insert right as it was too convex and tilted back , optician is a main dealer in pilla and tried everything (I also wear bifocal) we ditched the bifocal but still not right , so went single vision zeiss shooting frames , problem is on these size frames that the upper part of the lens is very think and really heavy , I put up with it but am planning a high rib gun for a head up position so I can see more through the middle of the lens as opposed to the top 10mm, tried varifocals a while back and scores fell through the floor so went to bifocal and scores returned to normal

If you need corrected vision for distance contact lenses are the ultimate solution, as unlike glasses, they don’t magnify the subject, be it clays or game. At least that’s what I was advised by an ophthalmologist/shooting man and it worked fine for me. A word of warning: the results aren’t instantaneous. Even with the contact lenses it takes a little while (say a couple of thousand cartridges) to get used to them. There’s my two pennies worth - hope it helps.
