Conor O'Gorman
Last week's announcement by the government of plans to increase firearms licensing fees has the potential to wield a hammer blow to shooting and rural livelihoods. The government’s justification for the increase is that the extra income raised will go towards supporting improvements in the work of firearms licensing departments. But here's the kicker, the government has no power to ensure that happens. As a result, BASC has this week written to all Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales seeking assurances that all funds generated by any increase in fees will be used to resource firearms licensing teams. While we await responses from all PCCs, work on this issue continues in the background to ensure a fair deal for current licence holders and grant applicants which is not only about fees but the state of firearms licensing. Two ways to help:1. Complete a surveyBASC has put together a short survey to gather your experiences of the renewal and/or grant application process with your local police force. https://basc.org.uk/licensing-survey/ 2. Contact your MPThe proposed increases to firearms licensing fees damage the countryside. The Police have no interest in improving the process, the worse it gets the less people will bother. Labour / Cooper hate private gun ownership. Conor O'Gorman
Hopefully a few PW members are interested in helping the cause? Please comment if you have completed the survey and/or contacted your MP. Should the current proposed fee rises take effect from 5 February the same arguments to further raise fees beyond inflation could be made in 3 years time based on pooled data from all the most inefficient forces. That is why we must get involved and spending a few minutes on the two actions below will help. 1. Complete a surveyBASC has put together a short survey to gather your experiences of the renewal and/or grant application process with your local police force. https://basc.org.uk/licensing-survey/ 2. Conor O'Gorman
BASC is fighting for a fair deal on firearms licensing fees. I would recommend that we all join BASC, the oldest, biggest and most influential organisation in field sports. https://basc.org.uk/join/
