stu nesling
just got back from a good start to the pigeon season, shot over some chopped maize that had been popular with the birds all week and ended with 105. shot. some nice tall curling birds ( to my amazement i hit them) and missed a few sitters as always. started to loose concentration after 80 but managed to hang in there to get the 100+. used too many shells but that was due to the birds not decoying very well and about 2/3rds of the birds were passing / just looking at the decoys. shot some cracking birds that made my day and even bagged 2 x young birds. stu nesling
👍 chrs tc/835. early in the morning before we went to shoot we watched 5k+ pigeons flighting to our maize and next doors. not seen so many birds for a long time. hope they stay around. and there was probably 3-5k on a neighbouring farm too, good times Edited February 22 by stu nesling

marsh man
I totally forgot this is a Pigeon shooting forum as talk from the field was beginning to get cobwebs round the edges , excellent bag of Pigeons and you are lucky to have chopped up Maize in late February , normally the Rooks and Pigeons would have flattened that by now , don't really matter how many shells you fired , there would have been plenty of people about who would be willing to pay good money for a day like that . THANKS for posting . MM

Wilts#Dave
If you’re lucky enough to have chopped up maize covers to go at it certainly draws them at this time of year. Nice bag, I’d love a 100 bird day at the moment!

kitchrat
Sadly, little or no maize covers round here, they go for the flower mix or whatever. Any maize is opened and eaten by the crows well before the end of the game season. There were loads but they have eaten almost every bit of leaf on most rape fields and moved on.

stu nesling
well, they are still there but not as willing to play this time though ! just back from a trip out to the same location as last time, and the birds today did not really want to play ball but perseverence and massive use of the flapper as well as the rotor pulled enough out of the sky for another great day out. i have seen the most birds i can remember for 15+yrs going back and forth over the estate, mainly in large 100-500 bird groups. because of the light winds and sunny sky it has been a challenge to get them to decoy, but i worked it out in the end and i took a good bag of 135 off the field. and placed them in the chiller for collection so nothing is wasted. there is still plenty of food left for them so iam hoping we shall still see good numbers next week. equipment used was a homebrew rotor, flapper with home made remote, miroku mk38 32" and fblu shells (which i really like, they are 1oz of english seven and hold a good pattern). i was on for about 175 but messed up a bit by missing to many easy birds. not all mine in the chiller as there were a few others out. after 2-3 weeks on the maize you can see how much fod is still left! they were high in the bright windless sky !! a small gang ! stu nesling
my god its quiet on here !! well just back from the latest trip to the farm. i was hoping for the same spot again but it was taken by someone else. i set up next to a wood that had its maize strip cut during the week, lots of food on the ground and a friend had seen birds on it during the week. he had even seen 2 x white woodies too, but i never saw them today. it was warm...18c and i was sat in the shade at the top of the wood and had a slow start with not many birds showing. things picked up about 10am and i was soon seeing numbers that gave me hope. a few decoyed but again it was hard work getting them to commit. the later it got in the day the better it got with birds now decoying strongly. shot well ...ish and came off the field with 101. was a good day to be out, and another 1st for me 3 x 100+ on consecutive shooting days...doubt i will ever beat that. part of the bag ready for the chiller.
