death from below
my motor is a crappy 51 reg Mondeo that is starting to turn into a money pit.....it has just flunked its MOT today because of a bad oil leak.......and the tax is due 2moro......I am seriously considering getting rid of it and not having a motor.....the little uns' scholl is a short walk away......Tesco's delivers.....I can walk up the high street to go on the beer.....I get free travel into London for my work.......I reckon i spend at least £2500 a year on diesel.....plusInsurance....plus MOT....plus running costs.....Diesel goes up almost daily in price......the only bone of contention is geting to my shooting grounds....now no car would limit that. Does anyone else out there make do without a motor.....I reckon even with using taxis occasionally we could save a fortune.....and get fitter in the process. I think it's one of those things that would be a nightmare for a while, but then we would get used to it. As you say, the occasional taxi would cost less than keeping a car going full time. It's just a convenience thing really, having it there, instead of needing to arrange a taxi there (and back) Having said that, I wouldn't fancy it
Dr W
Don't know if it's just a London thing but we have a couple of companies up here where you can rent cars by the hour I think they're called Zip Cars and maybe Streetcar. Have to put down £150 deposit then you can hire a car for as long as you want for £5 per hour. Not a bad idea if you only need one for a few hours and if you wanted a car for longer then you could just hire something. Respect if you manage to do it as not many people could live without their car, or so they think. Personally I get the train to work and don't drive the car unless I'm doing a big shop or leaving London but I like to have my own car to hand for use when I want it and also to tinker with. Oly
When we moved recently one of the main reasons for the location we ended up at was because my other half really didn't want to drive anymore, like you say, they can be a black hole for money and my other half just finds it an unneccesary stress - what with worrying about where to park and road rage idiots etc. So we did it, we got rid of her car and now only have mine. I need mine for my work, but she hardly uses it...and when she does it's to drive me back after having a drink! I know a few people who have now got ruid of their cars and they are a lot less stressed. Yes, you need to forward plan a little and be a touch more flexible, but through trains, cycling, walking, liftsharing (for which you can just pay you lift rather than sharing lifts) and some home-working (if possible) you can get by great. I give a lift to work for one of my collegues, and my other half gets a lift to work from a local lady - both are long commutes (mine 55 miles, hers 25 miles) but by getting rid of her car we've saved a fortune and she's less stressed which means I get by better too! Do it and keep an open mind, and like you say rent a car if needs must on occasion, but I bet you'll be fine, and better off as a result. Take a look at http://www.liftshare.org/uk/comstart.asp to get started on liftsharing

AdamC
My uncle got rid of his car about 6 monhts ago. Uses public transport a lot and does not struggle 95% of the time. Often though he asks for lifts to the station etc. He is always really good and wants to pay. I always refuse, but he gave me £30 at chistmas for 3 lifts to the station. He also did away with his mobile phone, but like a car, when you need it, it is so handy. I did away with expensive motors asbout 3 years ago, and now my whole view on cars is do it as cheaply as you can as anything more is just a waste. Perhaps just buy a little Japanese hatchback for emergencies and getting out for a shoot. I would not go diesel unless you are doing the miles to justify it. We went from a 306 Diesel to a Honda HRV petrol and despite being a bigger car, the difference in running costs are minimal.... we do about 10 - 12k a year in it and that is just on the crossover point I think. jerico
I don't have a car, I done a cbt 6 and a half years ago and bought a 125cc motorbike. Tax is £15 and at the mo I'm getting about 100 miles for £8 of juice, insurance with 6yrs ncb tpft is about £120 with legal fee's and recovery, it will do just over 70mph. Depending on when you past your driving test you may not have to do a cbt. I have a tatty customized one of these:
BSA Shaun
Looked at binning the car myself a while back, but when the train company want £3600 for my ticket a year and fuel will cost me at most half that, I decided not to. ME
Took the words straight out of my mouth! Damn, that's worrying. Back on track...... You cant do without a car. Oly
I recon you'll get some funny looks when you get on a bus with all your shooting gear I know what you mean about cars being a money pit but I just could not give up mine. To be honest that's what loads of people say...I would love to but I really need it...but you really don't, but until you take that leap of faith you don't really know. I use mine for work and do ~25K per year, but outside of work I hardly use it. Walk/cycle to shoots, shops, pubs etc...makes you a darn site fitter too! If we're going further afield we often go by train. Here on the Wales/England border we have a great little service that drops in some really nice little rural locations or the major towns for larger shops etc. Looked at binning the car myself a while back, but when the train company want £3600 for my ticket a year and fuel will cost me at most half that, I decided not to. Train isn't the only way - lift share, bus, cycle or combination of those. Like the idea of 125cc bike though too, have looked into myself, great for the lanes! jerico
Motorists holding a full driving licence issued before February 2001 don't need the CBT There you go, jog out and buy a 125cc bike or moped, insure it and ride! If your more into race bikes an aprilia rs125 or and old yammy tsr will top at at 110 mph although your better off at sticking to 80-90 unless you like rebuilding stroker engines. Have a look on essexbikers.co.uk, We're a good bunch on there and ride all sorts of bikes of different size's, there's normally a meet on Wednesday nights in the at the White Hart in Billerdicky.
