Fleabag
Shot a lot of ammunition to night in addition to a boat load of bunnies, but something happened tonight that had me worried after about an hour of continuous shooting my bolt started to stick when attempting to reload I think it must have gotten hot and expanded, has any body else experienced this with a hmr, cheers Edited March 18, 2008 by Fleabag

Traztaz
It will be sticking due to a build up of carbon, unburnt propellant and tiney pieces of cartrige case, the only answer is to clean the gun during shooting. These barrles will burn out fairly quickly if abused in this manner. triscrx
After every 10 shots fired!! thats a bit of over kill I would have thought.. I have just bought a .17HMR and fired 100 rounds in 2 days, Think I better give her a good clean today then
casts_by_fly
10 rounds, YIKES! that's a bit much. First, there is no set standard for how often you should clean your gun barrel. Only your gun can dictate that. Even the worst fouling guns can take more than 10 rounds. Each gun is different, but I just cleaned mine before this last shooting session and that was well over 300 rounds through it. Bore was pretty clean already, but the action has a little built up gunk. second, the barrel cleaning won't have much to do with the bolt sticking. The chamber and receiver will though. Best bet is to take a clean cloth and get the heavy off first. Pull the bolt out, and clean up the insides pretty thoroughly. Make sure the bolt head and any mating surfaces and clean. Then apply a tiny little bit of light oil. Should keep you going well. thanks rick

Where is that laid down?! There is no mention in my handbook refering to cleaning it after 10 rounds.. only: Cleaning of the rifle: - Each time you use it - If you get your rifle wet - As soon as possible after shooting - At least once a year in a temperate climate - As often as once a month in a tropical climate, or in a demanding environment

duey
Fleabag you can get an action cleaning kit from most good gun shops, it sounds like a combination of a dirty action and overheating. A .17HMR can not be used the same as a .22lr as it will overheat very quickly due to the velocity and type of bullets used Ian Edited March 18, 2008 by duey

al4x
personally I think it'll just be a bit of crud in the sliding part of the mechanism, as for getting too hot I find it hard to believe a rimfire getting that hot mine even when we've had some frantic shooting has never got more than mildly warm. As for cleaning every 10 shots that was rumoured by people when they were new but now they appreciate it takes about that many rounds before they shoot at their best. Mine gets a clean about every 200 rounds or when accuracy tails off. Certainly if you did more that 100 rounds last night you'd have had one hell of a bag as the kill ratio is rather good
triscrx
I fired 28 shots last night and 27 Rabbits got it Reason it wasnt 28.. I had 1 duff round.
al4x
exactly rabbit shooting may be frantic but its not consistently frantic so a lot of rounds doesn't mean that many, I'd be pretty certain heat isn't an issue. Even 100 rounds in 2 hours is less than one a minute
CharlieT
I feel pretty sure that the problem will be a foreign part lurking somewhere that is fouling the bolt. Some years ago the bolt in one of my rifles jammed solid. This was caused by a small piece of brass. Give it a good clean which I am sure will sort out the problem. Thanks, just gave it a good scrub with my tooth brush, lot of powder residue in there so hopefully sorted now It was the first part of the action that was jamming not the pulling back of the bolt. URBAN MYTH MATE mine takes half a doz to get back on after cleaning if I followed your regime I may as well not bother!! I know some who's guns take up to 20 shots before they settle down. mine gets cleaned when it goes off not before sometimes quite a few hundred, in fact I cleaned mine last sat night then took it to stead hall sunday, took one mag (7) before it hit what I was aiming at? the next mag grouped the size of a thumbnail (100yards) good enough for me I said and back in the slip it went. cheers KW
